Not sure about Texas, but in a lot of places you can’t carry a rifle ‘in the field’ without a hunting license. Did Grisham have a valid one?

Very doubtful in Texas or in most if not all places in the West (maybe in Kommiefornia) or the South. Check the Eastern Dem states though.

In Texas, no license of any kind was required unless he was "hunting".
