Damage to South Bay substation triggers power alert About 10,000 gallons of oil began leaking Tuesday morning from a transformer at a San Jose PG&E substation, which authorities said was vandalized, possibly damaged by gunfire.
The damage prompted the California Independent Service Operator to issue a "Flex Alert" Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for Silicon Valley because of the heavy damage at the substation on Metcalf Road.
The agency asked everyone in Northern California, but especially in Silicon Valley, to conserve energy as crews are working to fix the substation's damaged equipment. Power is being rerouted as the work is being done.
Santa Clara County Sheriff's Det. Kurtis Stenderup said it's too early to tell if the gunshots reported at 1:46 a.m. near Monterey and Blanchard roads were related to the leakage.

SV Ping, please?
Big gas turbine generator station there.
Sitting ducks for those crazed enuf to unload a clip at ‘em. Makes ya wonder if we need stricter dam and park control too. The state is a firing zone.
[sarcasm] It must have been the NRA. It’s a domestic terrorist operation, you know. [/sarcasm]
Somebody thought it was a road sign.......
Vandalism? Sounds like sabotage.
Just across the freeway is the Santa Clara County Fields Sports Park (Shooting Range). Maybe a richocette that travelled the 3/4 of a mile to the sub-station.
I’m sure somebody is going to call for the range to be shut down.
Or maybe, its just that shooters have to drive by the sub-station to get to the range that’s the problem. Ya’ know those shooter folks will shoot at anyting.
Especially when you factor in today's reports (KKSF) that no less than 5 transformers were shot, and FIBER OPTIC CABLES WERE CUT.
