“the shooter is subject to revenge assault.”

Thats kinda what I was thinking

When I was in high school my kid brother got attacked by another student who had a knife. My brother got cut on the hand, but decked his attacker. (He had a portable chess set with him, which had a pretty heavy wood box to contain it. Slammed the guy on the side of the head with it.)

A week later the guy and his friends tried to jump my brother as a gang. He cleaned their clock by grabbing a chair and using it to clear the decks.

The next week, having decided my brother was too tough a nut to crack, one of the guy's friends — one who went to the school I was attending — attacked me in the cafeteria at lunchtime. They figured me for an easy mark as I was overweight and had a reputation as a bookworm.

Instead, I mopped up the floor with the guy — almost literally. I fought the first thirty seconds defensively, waiting for a teacher to come and break it up. (I was in a cafeteria, for Pete's sake with a circle of kids screaming “fight! fight.”) After watching the teacher on lunch duty walk up, see there was a knife and walk away, I realized I was on my own, and decided I had to end it myself. Since I couldn't run (he had a knife) I closed, grabbed him, tossed him against a wall, jumped on top of him and proceeded to repeatedly bash his head against a concrete floor.

He did manage to stab me and puncture a lung, but the fight ended with four students pulling me off of him thirty seconds before I would have killed him. (As it was, I scrambled his brain badly enough that he could not get up for five minutes. The school cop caught him, literally red-handed at that point, covered with my blood, trying and failing to sit up.)

At that point, they decided they were playing a real-life version of “Three Billy Goats Gruff.” They never attempted to go after my older brother, and left my brother and I alone after that — especially as my attacker went to prison for the attack.

This was back in the distant past, before zero-tolerance infected schools, so I faced no penalty for my actions.

Afterward, other students thought I was brave for attacking someone with a knife bare-handed. From my point of view I really did not have any other option. No one else was going to help me. Had I been able to escape I would have run like hell, but I could not. I wasn't a hero — just a chicken without any other options.

On the other hand, I was a chick-magnet for the rest of my time at that school (and for the only time in my life). Not a great way for that to happen, but I understood why star athletes get so full of themselves by the end of the semester. (I was actually glad it was my senior year, or I would have ended up believing the press clippings.)

Anyhow, revenge assaults, especially against someone capable of stopping an attack the first time around, do occasionally end badly.

These guys are thugs in it for the money. My bet is that they never come back, but rather look for targets in more liberal neighborhoods — the ones that declare themselves to be gun free zones.
