(CNN) -- The man former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez handpicked to be his successor has won the country's presidential vote, officials said late Sunday.

With 99% of votes counted, Nicolas Maduro won 50.66% of votes, National Electoral Council President Tibisay Lucena said, calling the results "irreversible." Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles won 49.07% of votes, she said.

"I have won by nearly 300,000 votes. It is the decision of the people," Maduro told cheering supporters late Sunday, calling on Venezuelans to respect the results and respond peacefully.

I doubt it was an honest vote. Too many entrenched Chavzista's. But so far no demonstrations against the results. Probably a good thing for everybody.

The “gimme” voter crowd keeps getting larger. Socialists are winning more and more.

I doubt that Maduro (honestly) won more than 45% of the vote. Voter fraud carries the day there, just as it did in our own election in the US.

Looks like this could also be a sympathy vote for Chavez.

Has Jimmah congratulated him yet and told the world that their elections are more fair and honest than those in the United States?

The results were preordained. Cynics said that Maduro had won the vote before the first ballot was cast. Will Jimmah come out and proclaim this was a free and fair election?

The communist won. LOL, Jimmy Carter is probably happy as a clam about the perfectly honest election result.
You won’t hear a peep from that scumbag.

I believe that there was fraud, but sadly, too many Venezuelans voted for el sucesor del diablo Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias. Iberoamerican nations such as Cuba (Fidel Castro & now Raul), Venezuela (Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias now Nicolas Maduro), Ecuador (Rafael Correa), Bolivia (Evo Morales) & Argentina (Cristina Fernandez Kirchner) & Nicaragua (Daniel Ortega)are made up of Commies/Socialists. The only Iberoamerican nation that I’d visit is Costa Rica (visiting Costa Rica in September)-Costa Rica abolished their military in 1948. Spain (lived there 1981 to 84 & finally visited again in 2012) & Mexico (border town Nogales only) are the 2 Spanish speaking nations I’ve visited & Costa Rica will be my 3d.

Anyhow, the politics of many Iberoamerica nations is corrupt so it’s no surprise fraud would happen. Finally, ex Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is against current negotiations with FARC (las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) which is happening in Cuba because he says it’s negotiating with terrorists & that it benefits late Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias & now Nicolas Maduro. Chavistas were first neutral on FARC but later asked that FARC be removed as a terrorist group.

I fought in the influence battle in the NM political arena in the late 1970’s and early to mid 1980’s. Saw up close and personal the surrogates of the Sandanistas there. Also met representatives of the opposition in Costa Rica. At that time Costa Rica was the dropping off point.

Although Costa Rica is more stable than the neigbors, it is pretty socialistic. My wife’ best friend while we lived in NM was from Costa Rica. She met her husband when he was in the Peace Corp and working in Costa Rica. She was from a prominent family (locally) near San Jose.

Thanks Texas Fossil. When you wrote NM, did you mean Managua or New Mexico? With Costa Rica, the current President is Laura Chinchilla Miranda. I’m taking a 6 day trip to Costa Rica in September, so will learn more. As it’s about Venezuela, with Nicolas Maduro winning the election, Venezuela will continue supporting FARC with their negotiations & Venezuela will continue allying with Cuba-their main ally.

But Texas Fossil, since Venezuela morally supported FARC guerillas in asking that they be removed from terrorist group after first being neutral, do you think that Venezuela’s Chavez regime armed FARC ? Colombia has as I understand a 65 year war with FARC along with their war against ELN-19-el ejercito de liberacion nacional. While negotiations have been going on in Cuba, Colombia is still fighting with FARC. As said, ex Colombian President Alvaro Uribe opposes negotiations with FARC because he says it benefits Venezuela’s Chavez & now Maduro regime.

My knowledge of FARC, Venezuela & Colombia comes from watching Spain TV on Internet & seeing an interview that ex President Alvaro Uribe did with Jorge Ramos on ABC where again, he said he opposes negotiating with FARC as it benefits Venezuala. If you know more, please give your view of what you think of this. Most Colombians recently said they support negotiations with FARC but are skeptical if anything good will happen. Finally, does Venezuela also supporty ELN-19? I know it’s alot, but hope you can help as I think you know more about this & guessing that you’ve been throughout Iberoamerica.

NM was for New Mexico. I lived there form 1972-1986. Was politically involved in the mining district in SW NM.

I will have to delay my response to the rest of your post for later. Only have a few moments now to spend at the computer while I drink a cup of coffee. Full day underway.

Thanks. I have not been around much today.

Mature? Yep I am. But I suspect you meant the articles about the election.

I knew the Commies would steal it, but by the close nature of it I suspect it was not even close. And Chavez’s chosen did not win.

Now, where will it go? No way to tell. That depends on the Venezuelans.
