Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy is pleading with Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and CEO of News Corporation, which owns the Fox Sports channel, not to air a National Rifle Association-sponsored NASCAR race scheduled for this weekend.
The race "is inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre," Sen. Murphy wrote on Thursday in a letter to Murdoch, referencing the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that took place in Murphy's home state last December.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup, which is set to take place at the Texas Motor Speedway on April 13, will be the first top-level NASCAR race the NRA has sponsored, following smaller races hosted in the past. The winners of the races are awarded with revolvers, while the fastest qualifier is given a shotgun, according to a report from CNN.
In his letter to Murdoch, Sen. Murphy argued that the race "not only brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race."
In Murdoch, Murphy may find a sympathetic ear: The media mogual has long been a staunch advocacte of gun control and even called for an automatic weapons ban in the wake of both the Newtown shooting and the Aurora, Colo., shooting, in July. But Murdoch has not indicated that he will let his personal beliefs dictate the programming on his networks -- most notably Fox News, where anchors and guests continue to oppose gun control measures.
Murphy made a direct appeal to Murdoch's past language, including one tweet in which the News Corp chief wrote: "Nice words from POTUS on shooting tragedy, but how about some bold leadership action?"

Is liberalism the cheapest morality play ever? Rhetorical question, I know.
It is the country’s oldest civil rights organization that is inappropriate in the eyes of this Senator.
I am a participant in media polling, i wear a device that basically has me representing 1,000 fellow viewers.
I will be sure to tune into the NRA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway to assist the TV ratings. My son wears a meter too so we can do some bonding over the race and represent 2,000 viewers.
as horrendous as the Sandy Hook shooting was, I think the media and politicians have overplayed it and are now exploiting the sad event. It is over - we have all lost loved one’s in tragic ways and the best way to get over it is to get over it, and move on with life.
To say that ownership of firearms contributes to the death of childen is a blatant lie!!
I’ll be there tomorrow. vrooom vrooom
If Murdoch refuses to televise the race in Connecticut, then Nascar should cancel their contract with Fox and find a new telecaster.
If you ever figure out the answer to this “If..., then...” logic, would you please let me know.
As long as the left gets to decide what is appropriate they will always run our lives.
We should try to make the NRA 500 the most watched NASCAR event in history!
Glad to see the Democrats are attempting to exert control over the media . . . /sarcasm/ . . . the Dems could care less about the Second Amendment, and apparently they also care little for the First Amendment.
Hey Chris Murphy STFU!
Murphy, you make Biden seem the Einstien!!
It would be too cool if the NRA gave them Colt AR15s. Made in Connecticut.
the Faggot 500 would have Fiskars, Leaf and Volts racing for 500 feet...(the last car NOT to catch on fire would win).
My response to Murphy would have been limited to two words, with the second one being “off”.
Fox would lose far too much ad revenue if that happened and Murdoch knows it.
Where in CT are you from?? I’m from East Hartford.
“and even called for an automatic weapons ban....”
Funny, I’ve always thought automatic weapons were severely regulated since 1934.
Automatic weapons were used in Aurora and Newtown? Only in the diseased, lying minds of the libs.
As for Aurora, didn’t Holmes use a shotgun to commit most of those murders after his semi-automatic rifle jammed?
Chris Murphy: STFU and sit DOWN.
I hope the whole crowd has NRA gear on...
Good grief do these whine bags never shut up????
So now the democrats want to ban the NRA?
Is that what this about? He said they (the NRA) represent one side of the debate, but he wants them to sitdown and shutup? Surely not the way to debate, is it?
He is advocating a government ban on Free Speech.
