I don’t intend to “wound” an assailant or a home invader. I intend to kim him.
Quickly. Preferably instantly, before-they-hit-the-floor dead.
But since this is not Hollywood and an instant kill is unlikely with anything less that 1800lbs of energy, I’ll settle for instant incompacitation.... enough to put an assailant down (but not instantly dead).
If you shoot a crackhead high on heroin or bathsalts with birdshot, you are going to sting them at best. You’ll scare them for sure... but he will still have the ability to continue comimg towards you.
