They do look ridiculous, and while I'm certain most of them are for show, it's worth noting that there were nork pilots flying Egyptian fighters in the Yom Kippur War, and they were pretty busy on the ground in Africa in the 70's and 80's, so it's likely that at least some of those generals have tasted battle.
