~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune, North Carolina

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile United States military training facility in North Carolina. The base's 14 miles of beaches make it a major area for amphibious assault training, and its location between two deep-water ports (Wilmington and Morehead City) allows for fast deployments.

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is home to more than 43,000 Marines and Sailors from around the world. These servicemen and women serve with hundreds of company-size units that compose several major commands aboard base.

The main base is supplemented by five satellite facilities: Marine Corps Air Station New River, Camp Geiger, Stone Bay, Courthouse Bay, Camp Johnson, and the latest addition to the facility, the Greater Sandy Run Training Area.

There are several major Marine Corps commands and one Navy command aboard Camp Lejeune. Some tenant commands include Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, and the naval hospital to name a few.

To help prepare warfighters for combat and humanitarian missions abroad, Camp Lejeune takes advantage of 156,000 acres, 11 miles of beach capable of supporting amphibious operations, 32 gun positions, 48 tactical landing zones, three state-of-the-art training facilities for Military Operations in Urban Terrain and 80 live fire ranges to include the Greater Sandy Run Training Area.

Camp Lejeune is the home of "Expeditionary Forces in Readiness" for the past 65 years, and throughout the years, it has become the home base for the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group and other combat units and support commands.

In the early morning of October 23, 1983, the First Battalion, 8th Marines Headquarters building was destroyed by a non-Lebanese, terrorist-driven truck, laden with compressed gas-enhanced explosives.

This truck, like many others, had become a familiar sight at the airport and so did not raise any alarm on this morning. The resulting explosion and the collapse of the building killed 241 Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers.

I’m home!

Linda was Sooo Good1

It was exactly91 miles, as predicted...coming HOME.

On the way down, someone removed the signage and closed a few exit ramps and I ended up in Miami, not the nice section.

It only added 16 miles to the journey, but a whole 45 minutes.

And I had to ask directions to 95 from a Louis Farrakhan look-alike complete with bow tie.

You can’t make this stuff up.
