On Thursday (April 4), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it had begun work on a vaccine against H7N9, a new bird-flu virus causing illness in China. So far, health officials have reported that 16 people have become sick with the virus, six of whom died. Currently, the virus does not appear to spread between people.
The CDC plans to "build" the virus to use it in its vaccine, rather than wait for a sample to ship from China, the New York Times reported. Using the H7N9 genetic sequence as a blueprint, CDC researchers will synthesize genes for part of the virus and attach them to the "backbone" of another virus known to grow well in labs, the Times said. Making the vaccine is just a precaution — health officials aren't sure yet if they'll need to use it.

Starting early is important because it could take some time to figure out how to make an effective vaccine. Researchers know from previous experience with this family of viruses (H7 viruses) that people may need two shots in order to build up immunity, and the vaccine might need an additional component, called an adjuvant, to boost its effectiveness, Monto said.
If the H7N9 virus is still causing illness by the time researchers are finished making a provisional vaccine, known as a seed vaccine, it's almost certain that at least some batches will be manufactured (though not necessarily used), Webby said. However, before it's manufactured, it will need to undergo safety tests, Monto said.

My thoughts exactly.
A vaccine that might work against H5N1 would almost certainly not work against an H7N9. That’s the nature of viruses and vaccines that are effective against them. While I don’t agree with everything that goes on at CDC, I would much rather have them working this problem than the Senate Select Committee on Vaccines for Social Justice or the RNC/DNC.
Maybe it will work as well as this year’s vaccine. /sneezing sarc

I’m more concerned with Buckwheat and his Nazi mob in Washington releasing weapons-grade swine flu or smallpox to kill 100 million Americans and weaken the population. The only defense we have is the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) to ID the source and give that information to the military to take appropriate action.

The next day the bird flu story led on ABC with the usual hype.

But what people forget about the story is that there really was a wolf, and he eventually turned up and killed all the villagers’ sheep.
Bird flu has had a reported death rate in confirmed cases upwards of 50%. If it becomes transmissible between humans, and the death rate remained the same, there is the potential for a Black Death or worse scenario affecting the entire world.
28%, or roughly 30M Americans contracted the flu in 1918. If we had a similar infection rate with avian flu, the total dead might be around 40M people. And all our hospitals and medical services would be very little use. They would just be utterly overwhelmed.

The vaccine strain they use every year (in egg-based) production is ‘built’. They create a chimeric vaccine virus that has the exterior immune-triggering HA and NA proteins but not the internal virulence proteins.
Using the straight pathogen kills the egg embryo too quickly, drastically cutting the yield of the vaccine manufacturing process.
