DoD Labels Evangelicals, Catholics as ‘Religious Extremism’

The U.S. Army listed Evangelical Christianity and Catholicism as examples of religious extremism along with Al Qaeda and Hamas during a briefing with an Army Reserve unit based in Pennsylvania, Fox News has learned.

“We find this offensive to have Evangelical Christians and the Catholic Church to be listed among known terrorist groups,” said Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. “It is dishonorable for any U.S. military entity to allow this type of wrongheaded characterization.”

The incident occurred during an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief on extremism. Topping the list is Evangelical Christianity. Other organizations listed included Catholicism, Al Qaeda, Hamas, the Ku Klux Klan, Sunni Muslims, and Nation of Islam.

Not surprising. This is the same bunch that said returning veterans are "right-wing extremists" that need to be watched closely.

I wonder if anyone read the article. It does not support the headline at all. The story says that the instructor produced the slide, based on internet research that did not reflect Army policy. So, which is correct, the story or the headline? Both cannot be.

I suspect that the instructor was a contractor and that no one bothered to check the instructional materials. My experience with the Equal Opportunity program and with those involved with it is not good. These folks just aren’t very bright and they bring to their jobs very fuzzy notions of what equal opportunity means, except of course that’s is all about how evil America, its institutions, and white people in general are.
