As tensions mount on the Korean Peninsula, Wolf Blitzer explains what's behind the threats and what's at stake in a special edition of "The Situation Room," Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on CNN.
Are you from South or North Korea? Concerned about the latest crisis? Send us your thoughts.
(CNN) -- Missile and launch components have been moved to the east coast of North Korea in the "last few days," a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the information told CNN on Thursday.
This comes as indications emerged that North Korea, which unleashed another round of scathing rhetoric accusing the United States of pushing the region to the "brink of war," could be planning a missile launch soon.
The components, the official said, are consistent with those of a Musudan missile, which has a 2,500-mile range, meaning it could threaten South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia.
The United States has been looking for a hidden North Korean east coast launch site or mobile launchers, a concern because a launch from the east coast would go over Japan, the official said.
It is believed a missile launch would be a "test" launch rather than a targeted strike. That is because it appears the North Koreans have only moved the components so far. The United States is waiting to see whether North Korea issues a notice to its airmen and mariners to stay out of the region.
Communication intercepts in recent days also seem to show that Pyongyang could be planning to launch a mobile ballistic missile in the coming days or weeks, another U.S. official said.

It’s a must-read.
If this guy is accurate (and it seems like he ought to know what he’s talking about), then we need to close up that radar hole, or else both Iran and North Korea have America over a barrell.
Which might be exactly where the foreign enemy combatant occupying our White House wants us...
The mouse that farted.
Ignorant is a horrible way to go through life.
He will likely die in any attack. He may not care as long as he takes enough people with him.
I wouldn’t be so certain. Looking at the bigger picture China is mobilizing parts of its military but to what end? In support of NK or against NK? NK is also moving some pieces around that is a bit more out of the ordinary than what they are used to doing when blustering.
Tehran is convienently silent right about now. Both Iran and NK have some fairly suspicious satellites orbiting at very curious levels around Earth (I am certain you have by now read a lengthy article based on a former Clinton adviser).
I don’t believe this go around of brinkmanship on the world stage is much of bluffing. We have an incredibly weak President and his party is hell bent on hurting America while the opposition (Republicans) are absolutely nowhere to be seen. In a nutshell, we are ripe for attack and our enemies know it; their only question must be are we going to do it to ourselves economically, or do we need a little push from some nasty technology?
Think about it for a second. If our enemies could disable our communications and means to trvel, Obama (who already pledged never to use nukes) and the Democrats could turn a deaf ear to America and the take over would be complete.
I am taking this seriously..
So I might just as well cancel my house hunting with my realtor?
We were also told that we had nothing to fear from Senator obama. Wonder who said that one?
......”It is believed a missile launch would be a “test” launch rather than a targeted strike.”......
Kim-Un might buy that....he’s sitting on the fence now with no place to go....he has to fire something to save face with the military and the public.
I agree with all you’re saying. Obama has purged out the top brass and replaced them with ‘yes men’, the Russians and Chinese and Iranians loathe him, etc. We’re very vulnerable right now.
A super bunker has recently been complete under the White House.
Are you suggesting an EMP attack?
Nah. We have no idea what’s going to happen. Best to prepare as best we can but keep on living in the meantime.
And Obama just keeps fundraising and lobbying for gun control when that crazy lil bastid in NK is threatening the USA. Wow, did we screw up when we revoted that dude in. Not us per se, but the country as a whole.
Yep...
True....they are all idiots and liars.
I guess Dennis Rodman didn’t leave such a loving impression with the midget as the midget left with Rodman, lol...moron. Can’t Rodman calm down the little midget or there’s always Mr. Peacemaker Jimmy Carter if all else fails, lol. Lunacy abounds!
If I lived in SouK close to the border I’d build an amateur rocket and launch it off of the top of my apartment building and watch it fly over the border into NorKlandia just to see how much Little Fat Boy was bluffing.
Of course, I’d have a motorcycle on standby in case they started shooting back!
Pour les children!
N’encouragent pas le garçon!
My feeling is that the Chinese don’t want NK to destroy the good thing they have going now with the West and actually will not support him. However, they’re also probably afraid that he will attack them, and they’re much closer than we are.
Bambi is very weak and has spent his entire presidential career disarming and weakening the US in solidarity with his Muslim brethren - or his golf game. He alternates between left-wing muslim ideology and party boy. In any case, he is neither worthy nor competent enough to be president of the US, and he has left us at a serious disadvantage.
If NK doesn’t attack (not the US mainland, but probably SK or Japan), it will be China’s doing and not ours. And that’s going to hand world control to the Chinese.
So that’s what those 500K+ FEMA coffins are for!

China is actually gearing up their military to eventually take on our military.
