A Saudi court has ruled that a man who paralysed his best friend should now himself be crippled in an 'eye-for-an-eye' punishment.
Ali Al-Khawahir has been in prison since stabbing his friend in the backbone 10 years ago, when he was only 14 years old.
According to the Saudi Gazette, a court has ruled that the accused should now be "fully paralysed" unless he pays the compensation demanded by the victim.
Originally the victim asked for two million Saudi Riyals (£350,000) however this sum has since been reduced to one million Saudi Riyals (£176,000), according to Mail Online.
It is not clear how the punishment would be carried out. However it has been speculated that the victim's spinal cord would be severed.
Al-Khawahir's 60-year-old mother, who does not have sufficient funds to pay the compensation, has begged people to contribute to the fund.
"Ten years have passed with hundreds of sleepless nights. My hair has become grey at a young age because of my son's problem. I have been frightened to death whenever I think about my son's fate and that he will have to be paralysed," she said according to a report in Saudi Gazette.
Draconian
The concept of 'Qisas', or 'equal retaliation', is firmly entrenched in Islamic law, and the practice of chopping off the hands of thieves remains relatively common.
The use of 'eye-for-an-eye' punishments for other crimes is rare. However, in 2010 a Saudi judge asked several hospitals whether they could destroy the spinal cord of a man who paralysed a rival with a machete.
In the same year, a 22-year-old man who lost his foot and was left paralysed in a fight, asked the judge for an 'eye for eye' punishment for his attacker, his brother.
In 2000, an Egyptian worker's eye was surgically removed in a Saudi hospital after he was convicted of disfiguring a fellow citizen in an acid attack. The Egyptian convict's victim had refused £87,000 offered as compensation.
Saudi Arabia has been consistently criticised by other nations for its harsh punishments which include executions by beheading and firing squad.
The country has one of the highest rates of executions in the world, with 76 people killed by capital punishment last year. This year, 29 people have already been executed.
Obamacare would cover that procedure
stone age paganism...
Torture penalties are Old Testament and Jews should still be following that, too.
I'm for such penalties here, only if prescribed. I don't believe people should be abused in prison, but if a court could rule that a drunk who carved off the limb of an innocent using his car would lose three limbs (sans pain killers), I'd volunteer to help institute the punishment.
Hard to find sympathy for someone that stabbed his “friend” in the back.
Speaking of justice....19 Saudi citizens inspired and funded by the Wahhabi fundamentalists who are in turn protected and financed by the Saudi royal family caused over a trillion dollars worth of damage directly and indirectly to the US, and murdered over 3,000 Americans. Would seem Bush hit the wrong country and there remains a debt to be paid. The Russians or Chinese would never suffer such an insult. Instead the Port Authority of NY/NJ raised tolls to 15 on its Hudson river crossings to pay for the new Freedom Tower.
Neither stone age nor paganism. More like Iron Age Biblical.
Seems reasonable to me.
I dunno but I was always taught that two wrongs don’t make a right. Just say’n.
The Code of Hammurabi. Lex talionis; eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, limb for a limb, etc. 17th or 18th Century BC, Babylonian, if I recall correctly.
i actually’don’t either. i am also for liars trying to get people convicted of crimes they didn’t do, to be sentenced to what the innocent person they were trying to frame, would have received. this includes people faking crimes against themselves to implicate one person, a group, or just a whole class of people (ie men).
A broken clock is right twice a day. Despite their numerous other failings, the muzzies get criminal justice right.
Paralyze him? Well it could be worse: They could lock him in a cell and force him to listen to this all day..........

There’s two things I like about the muzzies: How they punish crooks and how they keep their women in line. Just the other day for example I snapped my fingers for my wife to get me a beer from the fridge, and if you cab believe it she told me to go F myself, threw a pan at me, and told me get my own beer!! Can you believe that? ME? Get my OWN beer? Cha! As IF! Tsk tsk tsk...How do they train these females? *Snap* *snap* *snap* it just don’t work with me. Next thing you know, she be demanding I pick my dirty clothes up off the floor or put the toilet seat down. Gawwd! Forgettit
Actually.... A much enter punishment would be for him to be financially and personally responsible for his “victim” his entire life...
yeah, that will teach him how to be a “better person.” oh, oops, I forgot myself, I thought we were referring to a peaceful religion...(sarc)
everyone they execute means one less muslim in the world....and the dead do not procreate!!
You have a remarkable memory, however there was a newer code (Mosaic Law) consisting of 3 legal areas that total 613 laws (365 negative and 248 positive). The moral code, the judgments or social code, and the ceremonial code or spiritual law.
The Mosaic Law is the document that God gave to Israel through Moses while Moses was on Mt Sinai. It was given to Israel in the dispensation of Israel.
The law was not intended for Gentiles. Mosaic Law was given as a system or way of life for the nation. The purpose ended when Christ died on the cross and was resurrected.
The following reads remarkibly like the Code of Hammurabi but is a portion of the Mosaic law (Exodus 22-25):
22:If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the womans husband demands and the court allows.
23: But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
24: eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25: burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise."

Makes you wonder about the "medical ethics" of Saudi doctors. I thought that the Hippocratic Oath was almost universal among medical practitioners, although I might be somewhat naive.
"I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.
I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion."
That second one there seems to have fallen from general application.
