IIRC, Bismarck cut the deal with SDP and the unions to trade cradle to grave welfare for not nationalizing German industry. So, Germany never went down the road British Labor went down from 1945 to 1979 that was such a disaster from which Lady Thatcher rescued Britain. . . . well, at least West Germany didn’t.
