The new study, by Shaun Marcott, Jeremy Shakun, Peter Clark and Alan Mix, was based on an analysis of 73 long-term proxies, and offered a few interesting results: one familiar (and unremarkable), one odd but probably unimportant, and one new and stunning. The latter was an apparent discovery that 20th-century warming was a wild departure from anything seen in over 11,000 years. News of this finding flew around the world and the authors suddenly became the latest in a long line of celebrity climate scientists.
The trouble is, as they quietly admitted over the weekend, their new and stunning claim is groundless. The real story is only just emerging, and it isn’t pretty.

Okay, I’m not well-versed in the fine art of statistical analysis, so that article was pretty dense for me (or I’m too dense for the article) but I gathered that the point was that the researches discounted any variation that didn’t last at least 300 years... except for the warming in the last few decades. Is that a reasonable summary for the layman?
Yup, even the admission that global warming is crap won’t stop them from pushing carbon taxes and other control measures.

Not quite. There are a number of things going on in this, but the main one to which you allude is that the data used for the periods earlier than about 1900 (or maybe 1880 or so) were not sensitive to variations that lasted less than 300 years, so there was nothing to discount. It was in the data sample.
As well, for the data previous to about the last century, they used other folks’ data, untouched.
But to produce the first graph, they took data points that had previously been dated otherwise, and dated them all in the past century. Thus, they touched-up the dating of some data points, thus producing a data set that seemed to show remarkable warming in the past century.
It's bad methodology, but without revealing it as part of the methodology in their published paper, it borders on scientific fraud.

Actually, Marcott, et al., literally changed the dates, moving core samples which revealed periods of warming to the current period i.e. last 100 years.
This was insane as Marcott had previously used them correctly in his doctoral thesis AND these cores had been used in other papers by other researchers, also with the correct dates, none of which reported a global warming catastrophe.
It is a shame that this author wussed out and used the term “arbitrarily redated” as opposed to the truth which is “They lied”.

Whaddaya know? Another hockey stick graph is hokey. But after it was trumpeted for weeks by AGW proponents crowing about how it was unambiguous proof of AGW. Let’s see if they’ll eat crow now. I doubt it, that bunch is shameless.
It does seem strange - but you're right. That is the universal solution - hand over money to liberal elites, socialists, communists... some group on the left.
Well, obviously they should control the resources - they know better.
