New York and California have for generations of Americans been considered destination spots to express personal freedoms

(snip)

The “Freedom in the 50 States” study published last week by the libertarian-leaning Mercatus Center ranks New York last and California second to last.

(snip)

The result is New Yorkers are voting with their feet, with roughly 1.7 million leaving between 2000 and 2010

(snip)

“The Golden State, with hundreds of miles of picturesque Pacific coastline, nonetheless managed to drive off a net of 1.5 million residents between 2000 and 2010 -- over 4 percent of its 2000 population,” the authors wrote.

New York last and California second to last in personal freedoms.

That's an undisputed statement of the obvious.

Where you live in Californai may have lot to do with it. In the big cities (which I never visit), I have heard that people don’t seem to have as much freedom, but here in the boondocks we sure do.

It's worse than the numbers indicate.

Both NY and CA have a net loss of population after considerable immigration of non taxpaying individuals for the purpose of collecting welfare, SSI and disability benefits.

The number of taxpayers leaving is substantially higher.

>>The number of taxpayers leaving is substantially higher.<<

I was one of them. Left L.A. home of my birth and residence for over 50 years for Texas.

More people in the cart than pulling it. California can’t be saved from itself.

It isn’t just economics, it is ALL freedoms under attack by liberals.

I swear all the Californians are moving to Austin. Ugh - go away! (unless you’re a conservative, then come on in!)

Why am I not surprised? If it weren’t for elderly relatives, I’d be gone too.

I feel like I’m stuck in an Eagle’s song!!

My older brother is in Ca. and most of my family lives on Long Island, NY. Hate to see them get ripped off on paying so much in taxes. NY property tax rates are criminal how much they extort from the productive citizens. They get jacksquat in return.

Amen to that. So many FReepers think that all of us Californians
are all the same because that is the only info they get from the
media. You and I and many, many small towners and rurals
know different. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to matter much
to some folks.

Upstate New York west of Albany has emptied out. All of those old towns along the southern tier are near enough deserted. Beautiful country. Empty.
