Responding to concerns from parents and educators about student safety during elections, the township committee has decided not to use public schools as polling places.
The decision to explore changing the traditional polling locations came within days of the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were killed.
"It was in the wake of the shootings," said Wyckoff Mayor Rudy Boonstra. "We were contacted by the Board of Education and some parents concerned about the security in the schools on Election Day. The discussions were about finding locations that were geographically suitable and would meet the regulation of the voting machine division of the County Board of Elections."
The committee began its three-month investigation with a decision to move polls out of Sicomac School. It later investigated moving the polls from other schools.

November 2001 Bayonne Board of Education briefly had 4 polling locations in a small school entrance lobby rather than the gym. This was scrapped by 6:30am
Bath house? Local NBC affiliate? GM showroom?
Maybe I’m missing something here. I thought schools were closed on Election Day in towns where they used schools as polling places.
No, in Hudson County , at least, schools are open for most elections except Presidential election. IE June primary day, Non-partisan Municipal elections ( Mayor & City council) November State Legislative / election for Governor.

Here in California the schools are routinely used as polling places while school is in session. They usually use the gym or the library and those places are off limits to the students for the day. We also use citizens garages, and local churches. Looks like the East Coast Marxists are going to continue to have a hissy fit over guns.
OK — I stand corrected. I always remember being off from school on Election Day, but that was a long time ago!
I don’t agree with this progressive putsch to close schools on election days, nor to moving them out of schools.
We need to have our kids see adults voting; we need to instill upon them the need for political due diligence and the franchise...
I can understand their decision, you never know when those pesky panthers will show up!!!
