Let's be blunt. The SA's Military is nowhere it used to be 20 years ago just before the dismantling of Apartheid. The Boers were tough, they fought like a first world military on a third world continent.

The S.A military has lost some of its past glories and they are facing real budget issues. No argument there. However, they are still better than anything in Africa (and again, I include Egypt with it's Abrams and F-16s), and against the Seleka rebels it's a white wash. It's one thing to say the S.A military is not as big/funded as it was 3 decades ago. A grown up discussion can be had on that, and salient arguments proving that easily made. For instance they dont have sufficent pilots to fly the new Gripens. However it's juvenile hogwash for some to say that the Seleka rebels would rout the S.A military. If the Kenyan military could dismantle the AlShabab/Al-Qaeda held Somalia that easily, it is ludicrous that South African special forces would be dispersed by Kalashnikov totting rebels led by a former civil servant.

By the way during the apartheid days the military was still largely black, and as I mentioned there was little apartheid in the ranks during the periods when fighting was occurring (during more peaceful times that was different). There are records of white officers openly refusing regulations that prohibited wounded white soldiers and black soldiers from being airlifted on the same plane. Actually a lot of the friction was primarily between Afrikaners and English (dutch white south Africans and British white south Africans).

Anyways - no argument from me that the military is not as big or well funded as it was thirty years ago (it is better equipped however, but that's a different thing). My argument on my post was that it's infantile for some to assume that the S.A. forces will be routed by the Seleka rebels. Not happening. This is a revenge mission, and the South Africans could send the bloody Soweto police and even they would be sufficient against the CAR rebels.
