Good to know that NPR (?) is doing a series on this. Tom Sullivan's been talking all week about it.
Just one thing.. it's SSDI not SSI. SSI is administered by SS but almost anyone in the world can get SSI (a bit of an exaggeration but before the welfare "reform" in 1996 SSI was mostly foreigners who had never worked in the U.S.).
At least SSDI requires working and paying SS for a time.

Interesting. Disability claims keep the official unemployment numbers down since they aren’t technically part of the unemployed labor force.

Benefit ‘clients’ now dont even have to wait for a check they get the $ direct deposited into a bank account and/or have a debit card they can use anywhere
http://www.godirect.org/
woohoo you can establish credit without even having to work
also, they have ‘seminars’ i see in the paper too where you can go and see ‘what you can get’ from the gvt-and it’s encouraged!

Very interesting. If you add back in disability, the unemployment rate jumps from 7.7% to above 18%. This segment is worth the podcast just for the statistics.

To be fair as bad as it is being abused vis-a-vis massive unemployment -- SSDI is not meant to be for the rest of your life --
apparently.

.. and even Tom Sullivan admitted that some people genuinely qualify for the SSDI part of SS.
But there is no doubt that it is an extension of unemployment insurance for millions.
The Obama GDP is exploding at a sizzling 0.4 percent rate of expansion.. any decade now there will be enough jobs.

after hearing the show I remembered this quote:
The poor do not need charity; they need inspiration. Charity only sends them a loaf of bread to keep them alive in their wretchedness, or gives them an entertainment to make them forget for an hour or two; but inspiration will cause them to rise out of their misery. If you want to help the poor, demonstrate to them that they can become rich; prove it by getting rich yourself.
