I missed this incident of Academia Gone Wild when it happened, as I was in Rome covering the papal conclave, but it has all the hallmarks of cluelessness and faux “tolerance” that we’ve come to expect from higher education. It started with a professor of intercultural communications (no, seriously) at state-run Florida Atlantic University requiring students to write the name Jesus in large block letters on a piece of paper, and then stomp on it. One student — one? — refused to comply and told the professor that he would file a complaint over the assignment, which offended his religious beliefs. The school PROMPTLY PUNISHED THE STUDENT, who might still have been suspended had the case not attracted a large amount of media and legal attention, and hopefully a large number of jaws hitting the pavement.
Now Governor Rick Scott wants an explanation of this incident, and a very detailed plan on how FAU would never let it happen again:

Or Martin Luther King. I really hope the “professor” gets fired but he’ll probably get a raise and promotion.
But look on the bright side: FAU has created a new name for its sports teams - “The Jesus Stompers”.

Did anyone ask why this professor picked a Hispanic name to stomp on?
This entire incident disturbs me but to be honest.. what disturbs me the most is the fact that only one student stood up and said no. Only one. The professor would have had more difficulty if even several of the students said no. I admire the one kid who stood by his faith... a modern day “martyr” of sorts.
But if a professor compelled his students to stomp on the word Mohammed, or Martin Luther King, or AIDS Quilt, I wonder what the outcry would have been??
I’m fasting again for LENT this year, coupled with morning readings of the bible and select LENT readings.
You can say what you will, but the Christian faith has done more good than any other religion or philosophy. Even when it’s ridiculed, it prevails. I pray that the POPE will usher in a new spiritual awareness, but in the meantime...
Has anyone else noticed this: It seems like the media is going after the POPE anyway they can. REgardless of the story, the slant is always negative or to propose some controversy.
The POPE could be giving a mass to 10,000 of the poorest poor in Italy...and the media will find some fault.
I’m not in anyway drawing a comparison of the POPE to Tebow other thatn their christian faith, but the media is doing the same with him. He goes to Seattle, and they quote some egg head on the team that says Tebow, “is a distraction.”
I predict, Tebow will eventually play in Canada or Arena and be a superstar, then come back to the NFL a superstar. It takes 5 years to make an NFL quarterback.
I’m sure there were other Christians in the class, but did as they were told out of fear of reprisal. What gets me is the hypocricy. When they say religious beliefs should be tolerated, they mean only islam and muslim beliefs.

Probaly were brow beaten into submission by this miserable excuse for a “professor”. Don’t do what I say, fail the class and lose credits you paid for. In the real world, that’s called extortion, and also religious persecution.

If they truly didn’t want to stomp on the piece of paper with the name, “Jesus” written on it for fear of reprisal.. then they (as Christians) have denied their faith. I can’t explain in words, chessplayer.. why it disturbs me that only one said no. They weren’t going to be fed to the lions. If I was a parent of one of the “deniers”... I would be ashamed. I guess in modern day academia, Christians will have to decide if they are truly Christian or one in name only.
I will explain it. Liberals are nazis. When the Nazis took over they made jews step on their torahs and cut their sideburns too. They are just following in their master’s footsteps.
I’m a little surprised there was only one...that’s sad. Fox says the kid at the middle of the controversy who declined to stomp and reported it to school officials resulting in his suspension, was a devout Mormon.

I agree. Modern day lion dens for Christians in the world of academia. This incident disturbed me so much that I had a conversation with my 16 year old and 13 year old. We discussed what they would have done (neither said they would have participated) and we discussed why. I guess what I hope is that parents of Jewish or Christian children prepare their kids for this type of “testing”.. the denial of their faith and their Lord.

I agree 100%. I am a Christian and have lost at least 2 teaching jobs , due to my pro-life beliefs and getting “caught” praying with students. Well, it has been rough the last 5 years, but the Lord has brought us through it. I am delighted to say that I just interviewed for a teaching position at a Christian school and, the Lord willing, my test is coming to an end!
