Ken McQueen of Oklahoma-based WPX Energy Inc. told the Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/Yv3MkJ ) that two wells the company drilled in 2010 in a dry natural gas section of the Mancos have produced 2 billion cubic feet of gas so far. He described the area as an "attractive target" to pursue.
"These two wells are in the top 10 best wells drilled by WPX to date," he said. "They're quite extraordinary for us."
Energy development companies were hopeful about the prospects for liquid natural gas and oil in other sections of the Mancos formation. Sign Up for the Daily E-dition newsletter!
Mancos shale is sandwiched between soft sandstone layers in the San Juan Basin that producers have been exploiting for decades. Modern drilling techniques allow resources trapped inside the rock-hard shale to be tapped. Three dimensional imaging helps pinpoint oil and gas deposits, while hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling can access the deposits.
"I'm bullish on the Mancos," said T. Greg Merrion, president of Merrion Oil and Gas Corp. in Farmington. His company is partnering with Denver-based Bill Barrett Corp. to drill exploratory oil wells in the area.
"We've already seen a number of wells drilled that are economic," Merrion said.
This will expand the gas producion in the Durango CO/Farminton/Atzec/Floomfield NM area considerably. There is already pipeline and gas processing infrastructure in place (may need to be expanded) service the coal seam gas production in that area.
Blue state. Colorado will drill horizontally and steal it
This is no problem for these job-killers.
Is there any US state without some oil or gas underneath it?
Excellent. Flood the state with oilfield trash, and turn it solid red.
IOWA has NO oil production!
Isn’t gov a RINO?
Have lived in the area for over 40 yrs. and find ‘oilfield trash’ to be some of the hardest workers around. And yes predominantly conservative. Hardly a bad thing, San Juan County is one of the reddest in the state if one bothers to look at prior election maps.
She shows promise, her first attempt in office was to repeal the illegal drivers license racket, but the dem controlled roundhouse kept killing the repeal.
Believe me, my remark was intended to be nothing but positive. “Oilfield Trash,” like “Redneck” is a badge of honor where I live in North Louisiana.
I left Yuppieland New York City area, and moved to Texas. I turned into “oilfield trash” in a few years, and proud of it!
My son has a decal on the back window on his brand new pickup truck that says “ Oilfield Trash”. He is damn proud of it and I of him!
Yup, and a chick as well.
Had to hold my nose and vote for her because her opponent was exponentially worse.
Violated my "no chicks in politics" rule.
