Last year, Red Shed organised five Self Reliance Expos, which pulled in 40,000 punters at $10 a head, while its radio network has notched up over two million podcast downloads.

40,000 Punters?

Translation please! :)

I will never be as ready as I want to be. I can always think of something else, or something I can’t afford yet...

The company also owns the rights to a book called Making the Best of Basics

That is a super book, perhaps the best, assuming that they have been updating it, my old copy is buried away somewhere and I don't know when I will find it, but I may purchase a new one if it is recent.

It seems to me that it should be possible to make a very powerful solar still, using a bit of passive technological wizardry, that could quickly and effectively recycle urine into distilled water.

Its big secret would be aerogel insulation and a Fresnel lens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel

Aerogel is a synthetic material first invented in 1931, and is one of the lightest known substances. But it is also an extremely efficient insulator. Fiberglass insulation is rated with an R-value (heat non-conductivity) about 13, but aerogel has an R-value anywhere from 14 to 105. Its melting point is 2,192F, about the same as for cast iron.

In recent years, they have figured out how to make thin, flexible sheets of aerogel at much less cost.

So line your solar still with aerogel, then focus a smaller Fresnel lens on a steel rod leading into it. If it was not lined with aerogel, the heat would quickly dissipate, but in this case the interior of the box will easily rise past the boiling point of water.

Then all you need is a condenser.

I am preparing by contacting my neighbors and making sure they know what to do when the SHTF. We are prepped to a minimal extent. But we have enough ammo to provide food. And a way to prep water for general use.

And we will spread our system to those outside our neighborhood.

If we can survive as a group...we can survive.

FUBO!

I went to make coffee this morning and the water came out of the tap all brown! I was shocked. So, I called the city water office and guess what? It’s Saturday! No one is there. So, I made coffee with bottled water and thought about it.

Eventually, I ran the water long enough to get a good color; but, I wasn’t sure if I should drink it. So, I tried to call the big emergency number for the city - line was busy.

After carrying on all afternoon, I got a city worker at my door who said they were flushing the fire hydrants because the Fire Dept. uses them for training and they let dirt into the system - happens all the time!

Lesson: I need to store more water!

That headline writer ought to know that the word “apocalypse” means disclosure or revelation, not calamity or disaster.

Without working class rural experience: no technical capabilities, no running vehicles (assuming the scenario presented in the article) and no fuel. They would be immobile. The few who would have mobility, would be marooned in remote areas they fled to (probably at check points set up for looters), surrounded by the more capable rural locals.

But all in cities, they’d be easier to feed and govern. Television broadcasting and receiving would probably be the priority. And junk food production, of course. ;-)

Lanza’s mother, BTW, received $240,000 per year alimony from her ex. Was she a member of the “prepper” class?

"The show hasn’t met with broad approval within the Prepper community, perhaps because it sheds light on a more sinister side of the movement, one that generated headlines when it was reported that the mother of Sandy Hook killer Adam Lanza was a Prepper."

"Nancy Lanza, Adam’s first victim, was shot four times before her son embarked on a killing spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School, murdering 20 schoolchildren and six teachers before taking his own life."

From the article, what the UK is publicizing about the topic. Meanwhile, our western culture business, academic and political constituent leaders continue to feed the new panic and hysteria in many ways (even some government offices presenting unlikely disaster scenarios).

Fascinating from the point of view of one who is more to ordinary work and peaceful living than television or other popular media. It's all quite a fad. I've seen enough to know when we're more likely to simply get physically poorer and quieter than to go out in a vainglorious display of anarchy.

Little correction of my typo:

One thing we need to think about, especially considering the recent developments in drone warfare. What do we do about drones??? Will duck shot do the trick? Should we develop an antidrone? We need some elemental thinking about this problem.
