Meteor Over Manhattan: East Coast Fireball Sets Internet Abuzz

A bright meteor briefly outshined the lights of New York City Friday evening (March 22), according to reports by witnesses who used Twitter and the Internet to report sightings of the fireball streaking over a broad stretch of the U.S. East Coast.

"Strange Friday night … a meteor passed over my house tonight!" wrote one New Yorker writing as Yanksmom19.

The first fireball sightings came at about 8 p.m. EDT (0000 March 23 GMT) and sparked more than 500 witness reports to the American Meteor Society. Reports of the meteor flooded Twitter from New York, Boston and Washington, D.C.

"The witnesses range from along the Atlantic Coast ranging from Maine to North Carolina," Robert Lunsford, the society's fireball coordinator, wrote in an update. "This object was also seen as far inland as Ohio."

They say it happens more frequently than we know, and that it is only getting noticed more due to the one that hit over Russia. But I think if that were true, we’d still have people taking photos of these things and posting them up.

Even I’ve been seeing shooting stars, and I’ve never seen them before. And not because I’m looking for them now, either. This meteor is more impressive than what I saw, of course.

Makes me wonder if some collision somewhere in space sent a bunch of chunks of large rocks our way.

This one does look and sound particularly dramatic in appearance. This report described it as, “A meteor that looked like an immense ball of fire streaked across the sky up and down the East Coast Friday night, astounding viewers throughout Massachusetts and beyond with its tantalizing tail of colored flames.”

Well that’s just great! That idea is just ridiculous, by the way. No disparagement intended because not everyone is an astronomer. But the earth along with everything else is orbiting the sun at great speed. There is no "our way". The only thing that could cause an increased incident of meteors is if somehow there is more debris everywhere, not just here. I see meteors every time I go out to look at the stars. Sometimes I see an unusually large ones.

So what you are essentially saying is that asteroids we can’t see and don’t know are there, cannot collide and fragment in a path our orbit takes us?

Wow. Thank God. For a moment there I thought that might be a problem. But since it’s not and we know all trajectories and locations of every solid chunk of matter in the universe, I’ll go back to bed now.
