No, I think the thrust of the article is to report that an appendix is seen in many animals which are divergently represented on the phylogentic tree and a reasonable evolutionary conclusion would demand that reason and logic would conclude that the appendix 'evolved' many times independently. Convergent evolution may be a 'get-out-of-jail' card for 2 unlikely developements but over 30??? You have to have a lot of faith in evolution without epistemic explication to believe that. The same seemed to be said about bioilluminescence in the article.
