WASHINGTON (AP) Unemployment rates increased in half of U.S. states in January from December, as employers nationwide added the fewest jobs in seven months.
The Labor Department says unemployment rates increased in 25 states. They fell in only 8 states and were unchanged in 17.

In before “unexpectedly!”
Wonder what the break down is for right to work/non right to work states?
I was in Vancouver, BC Canada this weekend.
I haven’t seen such a vibrant economy since Seattle in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Everyone was 20 - 30 years old, hard working, and had a bright future.
Canada (in case you’re not watching closely,) has had a more conservative government nationally and in most provinces for several years.
It’s working.
We need to follow the Canadian model, and reduce the size and scope of government, free up international trade, and reduce tax rates (always).
I doubt you’ll find much correlation.
Mainly because most “prosperity” these days is a result of crony capital flowing from DC which is largely directed toward blue states.
“I doubt youll find much correlation.”
Reason I ask is that when interviewed, the governors of right to work states indicate employment has risen. IE Wisconsin/Florida govs.
89 Million are out of work. 300 million population, with 180 million working age adults + minors. That’s nearly one half of the working population out of work. If food stamps and hand outs are all they’ve got, they are the walking dead - if anything changes.
Just curious. How do you see a vibrant economy just by a weekend visit to Vancouver?
Good on them.
The world is truly upside down now that Canada has a more conservative government than we do and Pravda prints more truth then our American media.
Does that include health care and free speech rules?
In Canada total tax and non-tax revenue for every level of government equals about 38.4% of GDP, compared to the U.S. rate of 28.2%. Canada has a national goods and services tax of 5% on most purchases, while the U.S. federal government does not, increasing the tax burden on Canadian low-income earners due to the proportional nature of a sales tax.
Energy. It was the most vibrant group of happy, spending, go get ‘em types I’ve seen in over a decade.
I’ll go get some data to back up my observation.
Probably the same as their “red/blue” breakdown.
Any place run by democrats is going to have a crappy economy, that is usually covered up by the success of more free market forces. However, in a recession, or when those free market areas are under attack,
the weakness of the socialist areas is no longer hidden.
Source please for these statistics. I do not doubt we are in a heap of trouble employment wise but I would like to know where you got these numbers.
The official numbers from the labor department for February, 2013 are:
Civilian labor force: 155,524,000
Civilian employment: 143,492,000
Civilian unemployed: 12,032,000
Civilian not in labor force: 89,304,000
Quite different from what you have posted.

Unemployment rates are down to what they should not be up to,only 12 million people out of work.
We have 11 million illegals here and the dems want more reform.
In the midst of a housing bust, they're still growing faster than we are. Our most recent Quarter was 0.1% YOY Growth, and the Commerce Dept. had to engineer that (increasing from initial estimates of -0.1%).

Haven’t we been constantly bombed with the “unexpected” news of how great the weekly reports were? At the rate the percentage of unemployed was going down we are going on a trend that would take us below zero by the time the hildabeast runs for prez..
Canada’s government spending is at 39.7% of GDP, and has been decreasing.
The U.S. is at 38.9% of GDP, and increasing. You may have forgotten the States and Local Governments.

The trajectory of each country is also interesting. Canada is shrinking its government, the U.S. is growing it.

People invest in the future and the trend. I like Canada’s trend better than ours.
Speech codes are troubling. Mohammed was a pedophile.
Taxing purchases encourages savings and investment compared to consumption. As tax regimes go, that bias tends to encourage economic growth compared to a regimen that is more based on taxing (punishing) income and investment.
So, on balance, Canada is doing quite well.
I’m just saying that a short visit confirmed the articles and statistics I’ve seen. Wow. Those people have it going on.
THAT IS A STAGGERING NUMBER!
The number of Americans designated as not in the labor force in February was 89,304,000, a record high, up from 89,008,000 in January, according to the Department of Labor. This means that the number of Americans not in the labor force increased 296,000 between January and February.

Eighty nine million employable people who are not working....A huge chunk of the employable labor force.
