His belief in traditional marriage could never have been on solid ground if he changed just because his son came out. He tries to use the Bible to justify this, and the Bible makes it's teachings on same sex relationships clear. If he was following the Bible, he would love his son, but he wouldn't support his lifestyle and wouldn't want to redefine marriage. This does not go over with me as I voted for him believing he was conservative on social issues.

Senator Portman is a major disappointment.

I’ve no doubt this was staged so he can get into the pockets of the pro-gay campaign contributors and prepare himself for a run at either the presidency or vice-presidency.

He is betting that the GOP-E will retain control of the GOP.

Considering that Romney accomplished 2 things other than running a campaign against Barack Obama, it is notable to review his two accomplishments:

1. He savaged conservative opponents with less money

2. He gained the right to control the convention AT WHICH he changed the delegate and other rules to maintain the power of the GOP-E for the foreseeable future.

IOW, Portman has read the tea leaves and thinks they are all coming up pink.

So, would he become pro-drug use if his son had come out as a heroin addict? Pro-polygamy if his son had revealed that he wanted to marry three wives?

Portmann is dead to me. He is nothing but a 5th columnist within the GOP.

He added that he believed opening marriage up to homosexual couples 'strengthens the institution'

Sounds like he "evolved" on the issue. Actually, sounds more like he saw polling data in Ohio that said homo "marriage" is all the rage.

I agree that this is the absolutely worst reason to change position on gay marriage. Don’t other people have children who are gay? Is he saying that unless it impacts him, that it doesn’t matter? He has revealed himself to be very shallow on one of the most important issues of the day.

However, I always am amazed at the comments on these types of threads that call the kid a pervert who should be cut off and disowned. The kid told his father that he was gay. He didn’t have gay sex in front of him. He wasn’t making out in public in a Gay Pride Parade. He’s gay and we have not evidence that he’s some gay activist or anything other than an otherwise normal person. Let him alone to live his life. Don’t immediately assume he’s going to be prancing around in a speedo screaming “We’re Here, We’re Queer.”

Bullshit! Queers have the same opportunity everyone else have. They have the same rights everyone else has.

Another rotten-ass turncoat in the Republican Party. Inexcusable! First of all, I wouldn’t want to admit to the world that my son was a homosexual. Second, I wouldn’t want to admit that I soul-searched the Bible and was unable to find the very explicit condemnation of homosexual behavior.

This man is disgusting to jump ship and approve of degenerate behavior just because his son is a sicko. Has his son been counseled to get help? Of course not . . . because homosexuality has so much to offer . . . an average lifespan of 39-41 years of age.

Our lousy governor now embraces Obambicare, and now this corrupt politician is endorsing the whole homosexual disgusting life-style.
Once again, Ohio loses.

the next we will hear from Portman is that his son is pregnant and He now supports earthworms and flowers. keep in mind earthworms and flowers are hermaphrodites - the ability to be either male or female in regards to sexual activity.

the problem in America is that America is so focused on S-E-X that the Americans have become to lose all reasonable ability to think.

God wrote the Bible regarding what is appropriate.

America will fall just like Rome. The soldiers were more concerned about keeping their “johnsons” occupied than caring about their weapons (spear, and shield). here now, the government wants to take away guns, yet supports homosexuals as the status quo.

My oldest daughter is a lesbian and it hasn’t changed my mind about about gay marriage.
When she married her partner in Washington DC last March my husband and I were not there.
She knows I believe her baptism does not cover what she is doing.

I will never understand the power this particular depravity holds over human beings. People don’t change their opinion of theft or murder because a loved one is a thief or a killer. But if the family member announces he’s a sodomite, suddenly it’s just fine.

I’m convinced it’s one of the greatest successes the devil has ever had.

One of the things we’re learning without a doubt is that the GW Bush administration was shot clear through with supporters of the radical sodomite agenda.

The more I think about this, the more I agree with those who think that government should be out of the marriage business.

“opening marriage up to homosexual couples ‘strengthens the institution’ and he realized his son’s sexuality ‘wasn’t a choice’. “

Why just couples?
And where is the data to support your belief that your son’s sexuality isn’t a choice?

You can tell this hypocrite’s faith really meant a lot to him. Instead of trying to get the boy help and his head screwed on straight, he put the son ahead of God. This hypocrital worm should never set foot inside a church again.
So I guess we know which way candy-ass, girly man Portland will vote on the Defense of Marriage Act. What a loser.

I'll bet Rob Portman is his son's best friend too, and NOT his parent.

When his son "came out," Portman should have "parented"!

He can and should love his son, but not cave to his son's homosexuality, while rejecting GOD and marriage between one man and one woman.
