Carnival to fly passengers home after another cruise failure

(CNN) -- Carnival Cruise Lines is working to fly all passengers on one of its cruises back to Florida after the ship suffered a generator failure while docked in the Caribbean.

The experience on the Carnival Dream became something of a nightmare for some passengers Wednesday when power went off, some toilets stopped working, and no one was allowed to get off the vessel -- despite the fact that the ship was docked at Philipsburg, St. Maarten, in the eastern Caribbean.

"While personnel continue to work on the technical issue we are making arrangements to fly all guests home via private charter flights and scheduled flights from St. Maarten. Guests on the current voyage will receive a refund equivalent to three days of the voyage and 50 percent off a future cruise.

"We are also canceling the ship's next voyage which is scheduled to depart on Saturday, March 16."

Confinement, stinking heads, claustrophobia and possible drowning.
Like WWII, but you pay them.

They should probably just go ahead and file for bankruptcy.

A cruise ship is one of the last places I’d voluntarily go.

Know too much about what goes on with the crew. And how they treat passengers.

[sung to the tune of My Little Grass Shack]

They wanna go back to that crap shack in beautiful St. Maarten...

They wanna be with all the honeys and heinies that they knew long ago..

They can hear all the toilets erupting into the gangway...the bilge overflowin' as the highlight of the cruise..

Did they cut too much from their maintenance budget? Or possible sabotage?

“A cruise ship is one of the last places I’d voluntarily go.”

We’ve been on 7 cruises and throughly enjoyed every one of them.

We always get a balcony stateroom also.

I’ve heard that you can pick up some groovy exotic diseases from you fellow passengers on a cruise ship.

I believe someone is going to wake up and drill right into the maintenance leadership, their priorities, lack of time between cruises, and a comical philosophy of screw-the-passengers.

What gets me...no federal inspector around to ask stupid questions or delay the start of the next cruise while the ship is sitting there for eight hours dumping the old passengers and taking in new passengers.

There's a show on the WW2 British light cruiser, HMS Belfast. One of the interviews was with sailor whose job it was to tend the diesel generator that powered two of the turrets.

In one engagement, he's at his station, dogged down in the bowels of the ship, and the water pump begins to fail. He looks around, sees a fire hose, and somehow runs it into the cooling system to keep the gen running.

Of course, when you're possibly fighting a German pocket battleship in frigid Norwegian waters, the stakes are a bit higher than when sitting in a Caribbean port.

why? each vessel is a seperate corporate entity with damages limited to the value of the vessel.

Carnival is insane for trying to get away with a partial refund and a partial discount. It should be full refund and/or free next cruise.

I don’t suppose you have a cite for that claim? Because I’m pretty sure you’re wrong. The ships are owned by Carnival and the crew are employees of Carnival. The ships do function more or less autonomously but they are not separate corporate entities.

admiralty law, if sued carnival files a “limitation of liability” motion. The employees are divided among internal corporations.

You also have a binding arbitration clause on the back of the ticket. (and the courts have upheld it)

you also have the jurisdictional issue of non-us flagged vessel in a non-us port.

Any ambulance chaser who files in state court is going to be making a mistake.
