I really hope he will bring the Jesuits back to the Catholic Church.

He has a sense of humor. He’ll need that.

The entire news media seems to be very insistent on their belief that there will be a Francis II.

He's Pope Francis.

Too bad that many citizens and legislators of the United States don’t honor the Constitution as much as the people in Rome and around the world watching the introduction of Pope Francis are honoring him.

I’m still in shock. I neeeever saw this one coming. Bergoglio was “too old,” everyone said.

I trust that the Cardinals were aided by the Holy Spirit when taking their vote, and that thus he is the right choice.

Not “Peter of Rome.” Rather Francis I of Argentina. So much for that load of “prophecies.”

He has a bit of what some characterize as a “social justice” streak, but outright rejected “liberation theology” some time ago. Apparently he really is a humble, devout, and no-nonsense kind of person. At least that’s what I’ve dug up in the past 10 minutes or so. Anyone else?

PS First Jesuit Pope.

Francis. Manly name.

I'm not Catholic ... so this really isn't my game. But ... born in 1936? He's 78. Certainly has to be precedent for a Pope that's in his 50s. Would've been nice to have somebody young enough to last a while. Gonna have to do the whole thing over again in a few years.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio: The archbishop of Buenos Aires is the Argentine-born son of an Italian railway worker. Seen as a compassionate conservative, he reportedly came in second during the 2005 balloting that ultimately elected Benedict XVI. The 76-year-old Jesuit prizes simplicity and humility and would encourage priests to do shoe-leather evangelization, his biographer says.

Prayers for my Catholic brethren in Christ, that the leadership of your Church has chosen wisely and selected a man who will do God’s work as His servant on earth.

Oh my!

“...he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958...”

A Jesuit Pope! This could get real interesting!

I’m surprised they chose someone who is 76 yrs old. I thought they might choose someone younger.

Very orthodox, they are saying. He seemed charming as he spoke to the crowd, and humble as he bowed and asked the crowd to pray for him before he gave the blessing. Lots of smiles.
