PICTURE: Joint Strike Missile makes F-35 debut

Kongsberg's developmental Joint Strike Missile (JSM) has been attached to a Lockheed Martin F-35 for the first time at the airframer's Fort Worth, Texas facility.

Installed on 27 February as part of a "fit check" to one of the stealthy fighter's weapons pylons, a further test will be conducted later this year to verify that the munition is able to be carried within the F-35's internal weapons bay.

Lockheed will conduct similar external trials on all three variants of the fighter, while internal fit checks of the JSM will be confined to the conventional take-off and landing F-35A ordered by Norway, says Norwegian F-35 programme director Anders Melheim.

A critical design review of the missile will be carried out in mid-2013 to confirm that integration efforts can continue.

Oslo will acquire up to 52 F-35s for operation by the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Two initial examples will be delivered in 2015 with a second pair due to arrive in 2016. These will remain in the USA to support training activities.

Deliveries of the main part of the up NKr62.6 billion ($10.9 billion) order will commence in 2017.

Can we equip it in a 30 round magazine?
So the F-35 does have some worth after all!
Islam is waiting!

That would make one useable engine on the F-35.

That doesn’t look very stealthy, does it?

Ahh, so this is what the thing looks like. Knowing very little about it to be honest, other than to say it looks like a decent bit of kit.

Were it to work, one wonders what deal the Norwegian’s might ask for, maybe in a bid to drop down the overall price of the (not a chance) 52 they are looking to buy.

And is has to be made to fit into the internal bay otherwise there is very little point in it.

I thought that the F-35 was designed to use only one engine.Am I in error?

F-35 does have one engine.. they were grounded because of issues with it.

(22 Feb 2013: Pentagon said that it had grounded all of its stealthy new F-35 fighter jets after an inspection found a crack in a turbine blade in the engine of one of the planes.)

I was being sarcastic meaning at least the missile engine worked.
