That is a derogatory view which was first popularized by self-proclaimed anti-semites in nineteenth century Europe and later incorporated into Nazi ideology: Jews were of a distinct, inferior "race." It's much more appropriate to consider Jews as a nationality or an ethnic group.
No, that’s not quite it. Unless you seek to dispense with the term “race” altogether, which may not be a bad thing. The name “Jew” does come from the tribe of Judah; in the Bible, the word “Yehudi” is translated “Jew” (i.e. whereupon other names so conjugated would have the suffix “-ite”, e.g. Canaanite for K’naani).
