MANILA, Philippines -- On the face of it Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio "Chito" Tagle has a lot going for him as a contender for pope. He's young: At 55, the second youngest of the cardinals. He sings and preaches on television, and has 120,000 followers on Facebook.
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has named him among the three "least worst" papal candidates because of the way he has spoken out on sex abuse by members of the clergy.
He speaks fluent Italian, English and Tagalog, and his French and Latin are said to pretty good too. The National Catholic Reporter recently called him "an effective missionary and communicator," and described him as the face of a "dynamic and relatively angst-free form of Catholicism."
There's a growing tension between those who seek institutional tradition and those who want to move the Catholic Church forward and reenergize its ranks. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

He became something of a protégé of Pope Benedict, and if elected would be Asia's first pope.
Before getting carried away, though, it is worth looking at what he has been doing with those communication skills and the state of Catholic Church here in the Philippines.

black smoke!!!
Megan Kelly just announced a vote - BLACK smoke.
“Megan Kelly just announced a vote....”
CNN has a chimney cam!
This would be news to St. Peter.
A 55 year old Pope might be just a bit too young for the old guard. He could be around for 30 years or more. That’s a loooooong time in power in a place like the Vatican. If he turned out to be too radical or too conservative there could be serious damage done to the Church’s image. IMHO they’ll go for a little older candidate.
Referencing SNAP and the National Catholic Reporter (aka “Fishwrap”) in the same article leaves me with a queasy feeling.
With this level of news reporting, it's no wonder Baraq was elected Africa's first president ...twice.
No problem with Tagle, and no problem with the other Asian, Ranjith, either.

HABEMUS PAPEM!!!
Seriously, SNAP hates him because he suggested that homosexuality may have something to do with the abuse crisis. Whatever could make him think that? Besides the fact that 80-90% of the abuse cases were actually between priests and post-pubescent boys?
And yes, I’m aware of the fact that psychiatrists say that pedophilia has little to do with homosexuality. But in that context, “pedophilia” refers to sex with babies, which is why I point out that the sexual abuse crisis was largely with post-pubescent (i.e., biologically adult) men.
Pssst. NBC. Peter was the first pope from Asia. Yes, that’s right: Israel is in Asia. So is nearly all of Turkey.

Actually, come to think of it, “Asia” pretty much meant “Turkey and beyond,” back in the days of Rome.
Which is why the gay activists have pushed the use of the word pedophilia. The reality is normal homosexual sex.
