She’s not even a candidate yet.
But the GOP opposition research machine is already in full froth over what it views as perhaps the juiciest 2014 target: Ashley Judd, who is exploring a challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
Republicans are homing in with glee on the actress and activist, picking apart her views and statements and compiling a thick compendium of speeches, writings and tweets. What they found: Judd may not have a legislative record, but she has left quite a paper trail.
This early opposition research effort seems as much about scaring Democrats nationally about a Judd candidacy as informing Kentuckians before Judd even decides to make the race.
“Ms. Judd has a bit of a habit of making bizarre comments and observations that will put Democratic officials and candidates across the country in uncomfortable positions,” said Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. “As for Kentucky, well let’s just say that Ms. Judd’s comments are outlandish for Hollywood, never mind Covington.”
The latest of Judd’s unorthodox views to rise to the surface courtesy of the GOP is a 2006 statement about why she doesn’t have children — which Republicans say will not sit well in Kentucky. “It’s unconscionable to breed, with the number of children who are starving to death in impoverished countries,” Judd said. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), who has been advising Judd, said that the actress was speaking for herself, and added that people in Kentucky understand the word “breeding.”
In a disjointed talk at George Washington University Friday, Judd, 44, may have given her opponents more fodder by referencing U2 rocker Bono, her dog being on a hunger strike and her extravagant travels. “We winter in Scotland. We’re smart like that,” she told students.

It’s interesting to note Ashley was not born in Kentucky, but in Granada Hills, California. A famous tv show was set in Granada Hills, which was better known as, yup, Knots Landing. Seems that a documentary I saw about the Judd women said that Ashley was educated abroad — France, I think. (I could be wrong.)

I am sorry I am so cynical, I want to see Linsey Graham primaried and beaten so bad I can taste it. And to see McCain recalled or retired early and maybe someone to challenge McConnell for the leadership as well.

Yarmuth seems to be pushing her.
He is the local commie from Kentucky. He gets enough votes from the uber-liberal parts of Louisville like the Highlands to keep his seat in the House. But he can not beat Mitch in a statewide Senate race. So he needs Ashley to win the seat first with her star power and then he can slide into or go after Paul’s seat later.
I do not believe Ms. Judd is doing this solely on her own. She is being pushed by local and national politicians to leverage her star power.
They probably figure if they can Al Franken elected Ms. Judd would be a shoe-in. After all, Franken never looked that good in a hockey jersey!

I think a lot of national Dem consultants are pushing for her as well, seeing even a losing Judd for Senate campaign as a hugh cash cow fueled by massive Hollywood donations.
Everything I’ve seen or heard from her indicates she’s little more than a typical vapid Hollywood starlett type that has built a career upon the foundation laid by her mom and sister.
The problem may be restraining the impulse to club her like a baby seal, which would allow the Dems to play the victim card and gain a fair amount of sympathy.
One more thing to add. I was reading recently that, apart from Yarmuth, KY Dems are pretty nervous about a Judd candidacy, thinking that her unrepentent Liberalism will hurt downticket KY Dems, who (apart from Yarmuth) are more Conservative and will have to run away from her.
I don’t know how the nomination process works in KY, but either a nominating convention or a primary is going to cause her problems, not only because she’s so Liberal but also because there are more than a few state Dems who have probably Bern waiting years for their shot at a Senate seat.
Why are the spending so much time targeting someone who hasn’t even announced a run yet? That’s besides the fact that I could beat Ashley Judd, and I don’t live in Kentucky (neither does she).
The other Democrat that could use Judd in office is Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson. He is the former mayor of Louisville. He is a good leader and would be a good governor. But his statewide draw would be a challenge. The rest of the state usually will not go for a Louisville candidate. So Judd in office could help him when it comes time for his governor run.
Her strong ties to the University of Kentucky are a positive that could overcome a lot of concerns about her liberal views. Blood - blue blood - will be thicker than political views for a lot of people in the state.
I will say that her and Clooney at least walk their talk on their liberal views. Was not happy with George backing Obama again. But also liked that he condemned the attacks on Palin’s kids when others did not.
I do not think that the KY liberal actors guild are that way just to get invited to parties like Damon and Affleck.
