A teenage boy who had been shot by his grandmother pleaded with a 911 dispatcher to send help as the 75-year-old shot him again, a prosecutor told jurors on Tuesday.
Sandra Layne is on trial for the first-degree murder of her grandson Jonathan Hoffman, 17, whom she is accused of shooting dead on May 18 last year at their shared home in suburban Detroit.
Hoffman 'thought he was safe... Sandra Layne walks up and shoots him again. This time in the stomach,' Paul Walton, Oakland County's chief assistant prosecutor, said during his opening statement today.
Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota countered that the diminutive Layne feared for her safety during the fatal confrontation in the West Bloomfield Township condo that Hoffman shared with his grandparents.
An autopsy revealed Hoffman was shot three times in the chest, once in the abdomen and once in his left arm. Tests showed the teen had traces of synthetic marijuana in his body.

The article seems to suggest that he was shot again whilst on the phone to 911. If that is true, it looks like was indeed murdered. Otherwise, it would have been easy to speculate that she did it in self-defence against her drug-crazed and violent grandson.
Such rot and dysfunction in our families nowadays ...it just boggles the mind.
More and more the idea of the sweet innocent granny is disappearing and these monsters are growing in number. Had one push her 3 year old granddaughter off a mall balcony in our area a few years ago.
Psychotropic drugs? Liberal mind rot? Mental illness on the rise? Or just pure satanic evil at work here ... hard to tell.
Synthetic marijuana. This drug seems to frequently be mentioned whenever they have articles about bath salts. Both drugs appear to bring about similar psychotic reactions in people.
Maybe granny was afraid the grandson was going to eat her brains.
You know, its easy to say that what’s being prescribed to seniors can’t be that attributable to what we are seeing and reading about lately.
My FIL was recently transferred to an assisted living facility, and was depressed about it. he’d recently had a heart attack, then a stroke while on the table. He recovered, then got hit with an several infections. On top of all this, he’s got MS.
At 71, if you are walking with a cane or a walker, you are living pretty large. Everything, however, is relative, and so he got depressed.
They put him on Xanax, and not only was this PhD and college professor lethargic, he was so zoned out that we all concluded, ‘he was gone’.
His wife, an RN, decided to take him off of it. He got better almost immediately. He reported hallucinations, a feeling like he was outside and above his body, almost as if he was looking over his own head at people; like he was standing behind himself.
He hallucinated rivers running through his bedroom, etc.
We’ve heard about what the kid was on. I’d like to know what she may or may not have been on.
There’s an episode of the Sopranos where Junior shoots Tony while in a state of alzheimer’s induced hallucination.
Not arguing for gun control here, at all. I’m arguing for a VERY careful use of psychtropics and anti-depressants.
I haven’t heard anything about this situation before reading this, but our news did a story on the synthetic marijuana and it can be some horrible stuff! It is unregulated since it is just “herbs” and they can put acetone on it and/or any variety of crap - just awful.
There are plenty of stories from when it happened that pretty clearly suggest that granny had reason to fear. Police had been called to the house before for domestic violence.
The pain-pill pushing doctors are also at fault, giving Granny powerful drugs for her aches and pains and not monitoring how much of the stuff she’s taking.
Many teens can access hits from Granny’s medicine chest for free.
There will probably be more and more of these incidents as kids stay at home longer. In this case, probably the parents had already kicked the kid out and his grandparents were being kind housing him.
Not that 17 is that old, but years ago the dysfunctional, drug-using teens would just run away and eventually either learn some trade to support themselves or end up in prison.
Now the kids seem to stay at home or with relatives and keep using drugs and no one kicks them out until finally we get some escalation in violence.
We really can only have so many adult personalities in a home without there being some kind of strife.
Sorry dude, but pumping another round into someone when they have crawled off wounded and are on the phone to 911 isn’t self defence, at that point, it becomes murder.
Sounds to me like she was pi55ed off with him and hadn’t yet finished venting her anger on him for being a drug user and general pain in the butt teenager...
It's made quite a few people freak out and die. I wouldn't be surprised if many kids who take this crap expect the more relatively benign effects of marijuana.
I think this is the stuff that made Demi Moore freak out and go to rehab.
So if she killed the little bastard with one shot, she would’ve been OK?
Maybe she wasn’t. But then again, there is something fundamentally wrong with a grandparent who is prepared to kill their own grandchild, even if said grandchild was a massive scuzzball in his own right. There is something even more wrong when she actually pumps another bullet into him when he is clearly no longer any kind of threat and is weeping into the phone for assistance.
I can’t really feel that there is much room for claiming mitigating circumstances here, unless it can be demonstrated that she was going senile and didn’t really know what she was doing...
Are you referring to the Tysons Corner situation? I think that woman WAS totally psychotic.
This one seems to have been pushed over the edge. Obviously there’s a background there or he wouldn’t have been living with granny. I’d bet there is a LOT missing in this story.
Usually granny ends up with kids like this because there was a single mother who couldn’t be bothered to bring up her own kid, or maybe drugged out and died. She was trying to do the job her daughter wouldn’t do, and she finally couldn’t take it any more.
There are a lot of families in the slums that have been fatherless for two or three generations or more. Either granny takes the kid or he goes into a government home.
It is also known as “spice” around here. I fired an employee for smoking the stuff in my back room last year, walked him out the door while the paint was peeling around us I was so mad.
I talked to a psychiatrist who deals with addiction and mentioned to her about what happened, she told me that the stuff is even harder to kick than meth which is pretty close to what it is chemically.
If you were to line all the makers and dealers of that s*** up against a wall I would volunteer to be the guy who eliminates the problem in a direct and final way and sleep soundly that night. they can all rot in hell imnsho.
