Crime is so bad in SA that people take out rape insurance on their children. I don't know how that works, but I have some friends who were able to move to the States in order to get away from the lawlessness.

My one friend was working late on election day (US) in 2000 after she had just moved here. She said when she got in the car and turned on the radio and realized it and went into full panic mode, because in SA all hell breaks lose on election day. She wondered how she was going to get home in one piece. In SA you don't get in your car on election day. She said she was surprised and quite relieved as she drove home.

So, the fear of attack is a constant thing. When I am by myself I rehearse in my mind what I would do if someone broke into my house. When I go to restaurant I wonder what I would do if someone came in with a gun. I bet what happened to Oscar was that he woke up but was not fully awake when he grabbed his gun and went after the "intruder." Acting on rehearsed instinct he did the unthinkable.
