When they started electing militant Socialists and black activists as Mayors, every white resident who could possibly afford to hightailed it out to the suburbs north of 8 Mile Road. They turned that into a virtual "line in the sand". About 15 yrs. ago the Detroit News analyzed census numbers and could only find 3000 black families living in the eight largest northern suburbs with a combined population of 500,000. Meanwhile the City of Detroit was over 80% black. Those are South Africa-type numbers.

Those who could get out, did. It was going downhill since Cavanagh in the 60's. Detroit in 1950 was the 5th largest city in the country.

Population 1950 - 1,849,568
Population 2010 - 706,585
