Airports have denied a claim by Janet Napolitano, the secretary of homeland security, that the sequester is already causing long delays for travelers at security screening checkpoints.
Ms Napolitano said today that major airports were seeing lines "150 to 200 per cent as long as we would normally expect" as result of the federal spending cuts that went into force on Friday.
"We're already seeing the effects at some of the ports of entry, the big airports, for example. Some of them had very long lines this weekend," she told a breakfast event organised by Politico.
When pressed for specifics she cited Chicago's O'Hare, Atlanta's Hartfield-Jackson and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), adding: "I don't mean to scare, I mean to inform."
However, when contacted by The Daily Telegraph, spokespeople for both O'Hare and LAX, as well as representatives from the travel industry, denied that airports had been hit by delays.
"We haven't had any slowdowns at all," said Marshall Lowe, a spokesman for LAX. Mr Lowe said that he had been on duty over the weekend and received no reports of unusual security delays.

Arne Duncan, the secretary of education, was widely criticised last month for saying that teachers were already being laid off because of the cuts, a claim without evidence. The Washington Post's Fact Checker blog awarded the claim four Pinocchios - its highest rating for falsehood.
Volken, you haf had a very trying ride on ze Reichbahn.
You vill now line up for a refreshing shower, ya?
Raus!
As far as I know....no federal agency has started the furlough program. Most all intend to start the final week of April. So I would pause and just wait till mid-May before I spoke up on this episode.
Now, there’s one other interesting aspect of this. Most all federal employees will be working four eight-hour shifts per week once this starts. As long as these TSA managers aren’t idiots and allows the majority to take Fridays and Sundays off...then the program ought to work.
In my own federal organization....they’ve already said that fifty percent of the civilians must take Monday and the rest take Friday. They could have spread these out to the other days of the week, but they figured everyone would appreciate the loss of pay more...if they all had a three-day weekend. So far, most folks are agreeable to that.
Her Janetalia is clouding her judgement.
“Big Sis is lying??? “
Big Cyst is lying,,,, yes.
Ut oh...I see either a beer summit or a going through Mr Lowe's trash aka smear job, on the horizon. Poor guy.
I don't know who's lying. The airport managers have plenty of incentive to lie as well.
Am I alone in this? Everytime I hear and see what the obozo, Binden, Janet (bull dike) Napolitano, Eric Holder, Gen Martin Dempsey, J. Carney, Bob Gibbs, Nancy Pelosi, Die Fy, Shucky, hildabeast and her impeached and ah hell, there’s too damned many of them to list here. Everytime I see what they are doing to us and this country, Nuremberg comes to mind.
It looks like Janet Napolitano is several pages ahead in her copy of the Obama/democrat script.
I believe that things are going to tighten up and pain will certainly come, but Obama will drag it out to maximize it’s negative impact. The pain needs to be a thousand paper cuts and it must last for 2 years.
Once Obama has both the Senate and Congress, then all hell is going to break loose.
Nope, you’re not alone.
Is it true that "loss of pay" is in reality deferred pay that will be reimbursed at a later date?
Bunch of crap. On Saturday I was at the Fort Lauderdale airport - and they were just a slow and incompetent as they always are. It took me ten minutes to get through at 5:30 AM.
Philly was a breeze—later that day.
So - she is a liar.
Nah, what’s their incentive? People and planes come and go; if the planes or the people have to wait, what does the airport manager care?
BIG BRO. I think you got those long lines confused with the illegals waiting to get into the country from crossing the border.
Airport managers take grief from their politician bosses when people get inconvenienced. They have a need to see stuff move trough smoothly, TSA mucking up the works gives the managers a reason to lie about TSA mucking up the works.
“Sure! Everything’s fine! Come on down to the airport!”
Went through McCarren and JFK Saturday. No problem at all.
Every time I come into Atlanta to International, Thousands Standing Around are always sloooow. Bet if ya rolled a watermelon down the aisle it’d cause a rush, though.
