Stymied by a GOP House, Obama looks ahead to 2014 to cement his legacy (Be afraid, be very afraid)
Washington Post ^ | 03/03/2013 | Scott Wilson and Philip Rucker

President Obama, now facing the consequences of automatic spending cuts and the complications they raise for his broader domestic agenda, is taking the most specific steps of his administration in an attempt to ensure the election of a Democratic-controlled Congress in two years.

“What I can’t do is force Congress to do the right thing,” Obama told reporters at the White House on Friday after a fruitless meeting with Republican leaders to avert the country’s latest fiscal crisis, known as the sequester. “The American people may have the capacity to do that.”

Obama, fresh off his November reelection, began almost at once executing plans to win back the House in 2014, which he and his advisers believe will be crucial to the outcome of his second term and to his legacy as president. He is doing so by trying to articulate for the American electorate his own feelings — an exasperation with an opposition party that blocks even the most politically popular elements of his agenda.

Obama has committed to raising money for fellow Democrats, agreed to help recruit viable candidates, and launched a political nonprofit group dedicated to furthering his agenda and that of his congressional allies. The goal is to flip the Republican-held House back to Democratic control, allowing Obama to push forward with a progressive agenda on gun control, immigration, climate change and the economy during his final two years in office, according to congressional Democrats, strategists and others familiar with Obama’s thinking.

“The president understands that to get anything done, he needs a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives,” said Rep. Steve Israel (N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “To have a legacy in 2016, he will need a House majority in 2014, and that work has to start now.”

What legacy? Massive debt and job killing?

I agree with your comment: “Be afraid, be very afraid”

Nobody could defeat the US from the outside, but it is easy to destroy it from the inside, which has been their goal all along.

On another thread is a discussion of Caddell and Schoen's column regarding the President's agenda.

If you read my post there, please ignore it as pasted below:

This President's "agenda"--whatever it is--is intended by "the People's" Constitution to be subject to that Constitution's limits and bounds! An American President's "agenda," first and foremost, should have as its primary goal a strict adherence to and respect for that Constitution as the "supreme law of the land."

The second President of the U. S., John Adams, a signer of the Constitution, in his First Inaugural's closing paragraph, laid out his understanding of the qualifications for the Office of President.

Inaugural Address of President John Adams

- (Excerpted & reformatted final words)

Philadelphia, March 4, 1797

“. . . as something may be expected, the occasion, I hope, will be admitted as an apology if I venture to say that

- if a preference, upon principle, of a free republican government, formed upon long and serious reflection, after a diligent and impartial inquiry after truth;

- if an attachment to the Constitution of the United States, and a conscientious determination to support it until it shall be altered by the judgments and wishes of the people, expressed in the mode prescribed in it;

- if a respectful attention to the constitutions of the individual States and a constant caution and delicacy toward the State governments;

- if an equal and impartial regard to the rights, interest, honor, and happiness of all the States in the Union, without preference or regard to a northern or southern, an eastern or western, position, their various political opinions on unessential points or their personal attachments;

- if a love of virtuous men of all parties and denominations;

- if a love of science and letters and a wish to patronize every rational effort to encourage schools, colleges, universities, academies, and every institution for propagating knowledge, virtue, and religion among all classes of the people, not only for their benign influence on the happiness of life in all its stages and classes, and of society in all its forms, but as the only means of preserving our Constitution from its natural enemies, the spirit of sophistry, the spirit of party, the spirit of intrigue, the profligacy of corruption, and the pestilence of foreign influence, which is the angel of destruction to elective governments;

- if a love of equal laws, of justice, and humanity in the interior administration;

- if an inclination to improve agriculture, commerce, and manufacturers for necessity, convenience, and defense;

- if a spirit of equity and humanity toward the aboriginal nations of America, and a disposition to meliorate their condition by inclining them to be more friendly to us, and our citizens to be more friendly to them;

- if an inflexible determination to maintain peace and inviolable faith with all nations, and that system of neutrality and impartiality among the belligerent powers of Europe which has been adopted by this Government and so solemnly sanctioned by both Houses of Congress and applauded by the legislatures of the States and the public opinion, until it shall be otherwise ordained by Congress;

- if a personal esteem for the French nation, formed in a residence of seven years chiefly among them, and a sincere desire to preserve the friendship which has been so much for the honor and interest of both nations;

- if, while the conscious honor and integrity of the people of America and the internal sentiment of their own power and energies must be preserved, an earnest endeavor to investigate every just cause and remove every colorable pretense of complaint;

- if an intention to pursue by amicable negotiation a reparation for the injuries that have been committed on the commerce of our fellow-citizens by whatever nation, and if success can not be obtained, to lay the facts before the Legislature, that they may consider what further measures the honor and interest of the Government and its constituents demand;

- if a resolution to do justice as far as may depend upon me, at all times and to all nations, and maintain peace, friendship, and benevolence with all the world;

- if an unshaken confidence in the honor, spirit, and resources of the American people, on which I have so often hazarded my all and never been deceived;

- if elevated ideas of the high destinies of this country and of my own duties toward it, founded on a knowledge of the moral principles and intellectual improvements of the people deeply engraven on my mind in early life, and not obscured but exalted by experience and age;

and, with humble reverence, I feel it to be my duty to add, if a veneration for the religion of a people who profess and call themselves Christians, and a fixed resolution to consider a decent respect for Christianity among the best recommendations for the public service, can enable me in any degree to comply with your wishes, it shall be my strenuous endeavor that this sagacious injunction of the two Houses shall not be without effect.

With this great example before me, with the sense and spirit, the  faith and honor, the duty and interest, of the same American people pledged to support the Constitution of the United States, I entertain no doubt of its continuance in all its energy, and my mind is prepared without hesitation to lay myself under the most solemn obligations to support it to the utmost of my power.

And may that Being who is supreme over all, the Patron of Order, the Fountain of Justice, and the Protector in all ages of the world of virtuous liberty, continue His blessing upon this nation and its Government and give it

automatic spending cuts

SeekAndFind, I appreciate your posting so others may read, I have to offer my apology for the italics (above) from the article caused me to see a lie, in print, as being a truth. Had to stop reading for knew more lies would follow covered in being an opinion, as mine too, when typing, is considered an opinion, as it is. The truth, as many know, is there were no cuts. The truth is more of the same which the insane say will destroy our nation. Can't have no truth telling going on out here or there, it's too dangerous.

If they take back the house then EVERY gop congressman and senator should resign. Let the country go to hell. It’s the CONSERVATIVES who didn’t show up to carry Romney over the finish line and this is what we get. I can remember when Arnold called a special election with 5 conservative propositions-a perfect setup if we took advantage. All 5 propositions failed in the expected low turnout election and Arnold turned RINO. We have only ourselves to blame. It will be too late when the next Reagan arrives.

I can see it now ... the lame-stream drive-bys are negotiating the price to make it so.

Since Obama is not personally running, most of his communist fellow-travelers will stay home. These people are too busy smoking dope, watching inane reality tv shows, and procreating outside the bounds marriage to be bothered with voting again so soon.

If the Republicans don’t shoot themselves in the feet again, they should be able to consolidate gains in the House and take back the Senate. We will see more grid-lock. Get use to it. In these troubled times, that is about the best we can hope for.

And yet there are dingbats among us who will sit home rather than vote "R" if the GOP House candidate isn't pure enough. 2014 is a continued blocking action, the most important thing right now is to NOT allow the Democrats to win back the House. It will be a victory even if all that the House Republicans accomplish is to block the worst of Obama's agenda (significant gun control, climate change taxes, etc). The next most important thing is to win the Senate back so we can maybe force him to veto some popular bills for once.

Yes, that was in 2005 a pivotal year in CA politics.

Not sure what else could have been done. The usual radio commercial drivel regarding protecting teachers and public safety won the day.

Our message is a harder sell. We are trying to avert catastrophe that appears distant.

The recent elections show that until the catastrophe, it's business as usual; grow the government.

There's a good chance the catastrophe won't happen in our lifetimes.

Preventing it would be our legacy.

We lost the House in ‘06 because of Mark Foley writing flitatious e-mails to a legal aged aid.

It’s not like they actually need anything more than sensationalized story and a willing press

Get a grip. That's not within the realm of possibility.
No, the plan is for Michelle to run in 2016. The Chicago mob, direct descendants of the Capone mob, have no intention of vacating the White House quietly. What might make things interesting is if the Dixie mob has something to say about the plan. They want the Clintons (Hillary) back in there. Of course, it has been known for competing mobs to keep each other happy by uniting and simply dividing up the spoils.

The only reason we have the house is because in 2010 the Tea Party pushed it to the right; and the elected were able to draw beneficial districts.

These two events may save the nation. These Tea Party guys are our RAF Spitfire pilots protecting us from a seemingly all powerful aggressor regime.

We have a certain Alaska governor to thank. If she accomplishes nothing else on the national stage, the Tea Party was her legacy.

In the meantime run petitions locally for averting BS climate change garbage or other conservative causes. This method will tighten a ground-game network.....

I think the honeymoon is finally, officially OVER.

People are going to start mocking Obama (just like SNL did last night) and Obummer can’t take any kind of criticism.

I think the next year will be very interesting.

Barack Museveni Obama is a tyrant and dictator. (in case you are unaware of my allusion to Museveni, please google the name; there are plenty of parallels)

This is another reason why we are doomed. Not only to we have to fight the media but others in our own ranks. Makes no sense but those are the facts.
