Opinions Mixed As State Takeover Looms In Detroit

.... Also among those who oppose the EFM (emergency financial manager) move is U.S. Congressman Gary Peters, who said he’s “deeply disappointed” in the governor’s decision.

“All of us agree that the city has serious financial challenges which must be addressed, however I fundamentally disagree with taking measures that disenfranchise the families I represent in Detroit,” Peters said, in a statement. .....

Said (mayor) Bing on Friday, “The governor has made his decision, and it was his decision alone to make. While I respect it, I have said all along that I do not favor an emergency Manager for the City of Detroit. I will look at the impact of the Governor’s decision as well as other options, to determine my next course of action.” (Read his complete statement here).

Former city council member Sheila Cockrel said she realizes it’s a tough pill to swallow, but she believes an emergency financial manager is a necessity for Detroit.

Cockrel said a financial manager can do the job without the same constraints as local elected officials. However, she said an EFM can’t do it alone.

Heh. It's always the same.

When Buffalo was put under the control of a state financial control board, the usual lefties whined, too. But it worked. Well, I mean, these things can't do miracles.

People are still leaving the city in droves, but the budget's balanced. That's progress.

What caused this problem? Does this plan keep it from happening again? If you knowingly keep voting crooks into office, shouldn’t you suffer some kind of correction? If they take outside money, then they lose their voting privileges.

Send in the troops—establish martial law and an 8 pm curfew! Investigate all corruption, hang the worst offenders. Search every house for drugs and illegal guns. Make it safe again for kids and old folks even if the gangs must be stamped out like vermin. Control must be established by any means possible.

“just let the natives burn it down...”

Detroiters always had a uncanny ability to burn all kinds of things. My personal favorite was scouting out all of the discarded Christmas trees, standing em up in a snow bank, and, voila, let there be light.

Good plan. Suspend habeus corpus, break those doors down, suspend rule of law. Yeah, that’s it, a plan Akbar Hussein Mao-Bama would love.

Why MI taxpayers outside of Detroit should be willing to “give back” or be otherwise concerned...To quote a longtime local TV news anchor, “After all, we’re ALL Detroiters.”
