The Democratic Majority Is Doomed: The entitlement mentality can't survive a weak economy.
Wall Street Journal ^ | 03/01/2013 | Pete Du Pont

Many argue the coalition that elected and re-elected Barack Obama represents a long-term shift in the electorate that will determine elections and public policies for generations. Some of commentators think conservatives have lost their relevance, and the Republicans are about to go the way of the Whigs.

It's an interesting theory, but of course it's wrong. Politics, like much in life, tends to move like a pendulum, shifting back and forth around equilibrium. While the liberal Democratic coalition is ascendant now, a few decades ago people were speaking about the decline of the Democrats. More recently, leftists took to calling themselves "progressives" to avoid what was seen as the pejorative term "liberal." And just over two years ago, the Democrats took a drubbing in the midterm elections. Today, with the real-time flow of unfiltered information via blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc., and more Americans self-identifying as independents and able to shift their support rapidly to either party, lasting coalitions will be difficult to maintain.

But the primary reason today's liberal Democratic coalition will fade is because the very policies it pushes sow the seeds of its own destruction. The coalition can survive over time only by allocating slices of our nation's economic pie in a way that favors and placates its constituent members. But people, being human, will continually want larger slices of our economic resources, so continued success in placating those members, while at the same time adding the necessary new members, requires a continuing and ever-growing economy. A flat or shrinking economy will never generate the resources needed to feed the coalition.

Yet the White House and congressional Democrats are working to stifle economic growth.

Bingo! My first thought...

When the entitlement mentality takes hold and the money runs out, the "entitled" take their violence to the streets. If the politicians and police do not subdue the violence, counter violence will arise, as people attempt to protect their lives and property. Think Weimar Republic.

Obama, the Democrats, the Media, the School Complex and their coalition have a touching faith the law-abiding goodness of the American People. They have spent decades undermining the Rule of Law, that we have reached the point, where the Federal Government is a lawless monster. They are creating the conditions for mass political violence in America.

They will be even more shocked and stunned, than Donna Brazile discovering that her health care insurance premiums went up after years of pushing for nationalization of healthcare. Those Wascally Wepublicans are just evil.

It's going to get really ugly out there.

I think they are fomenting the entitlement riots.
Who do you think their guns will be pointed at, the rioters or the defenders?

For a preview, look at what happened in Oakland with a far-left Mayor and the Occupy Oakland movement. The Oakland Police are not under attack for subduing the Occupiers.

Sorry I was offline for a while.

I agree with you in part, that Palin does not currently seem to be all that she could be. There is a “markets before Americanism” streak which virtually all GOP (and Dem) politicians hold deep and central to their beliefs which Palin also seems to hold.

That bothers me. Rush Limbaugh has it too. But so does every politician.

That they will sell out America in the name of free trade.

I’m tired of that. EVERY POLITICIAN is selling out America in the name of free trade.

I keep that in mind. All politicians have that, and I criticize them all for that. But that is apparently weaker in Palin than some others, which I therefore support.

We need to stop supporting other countries.

3 decades is long enough. Bring American jobs home.

Sorry, seems to me that you are taking the “free trade” issue to new heights. Don’t you think that competing companies selling the same product should compete? If one offers a lower price for the same product - would you not buy it at the lower price?

I think that you are really worried about is “free trade” in the international sense - ie., competing countries. Is that it? Of course you understand that competition makes it cheaper for us consumers don’t you? Money is always lost and gained depending upon where your coming from.

Politicians will always be political - so nothing will ever be gained by voting for whomever you wish unless they have actual hard core beliefs. Since they are running as a politician, that belief and their follow up actions would be very rare if consistent. Until we the people run and have the moral understanding to withstand the degradation of Washington and its amoral influence, we will never win.

Such is political life - a massive haven of immoral politicians trying to control the masses. Anyone who runs is suspect and anyone who doesn’t want to run is suspect.

Sorry, I’m looking back at my comments and can find no mention of entitlements. Please clarify your disagreement with my comments.

How about you’re entitled to your opinion but I have no idea where it is coming from... How’s that?

If you’re trying to get a point across, sure would like to know what it is, eh? (That is Canadian for what the heck?).

Bingo. 100%. Correct correct correct.

You nailed it. We seem determined to give away control over all of our companies operations, while at the same time China likewise seems determined to gain control over all of US companies. Making them eventually Chinese companies.

It is like a perfect problem. I see that process ending in only one way.

How do you see such a process ending?
