If you wanted to digest it all in one chart, it might be this one: A chart of the VIX -- aka "The Fear Index" -- which measures how much people are trying to buy protection against a big downside drop using options.
It went ballistic today. This is raw fear, as people buy protection against a big drop.

It could be fear. It could also be someone trying to capitalize on impending bad news. Including bad news of their own making such as another 9/11. Somehow I doubt an election in Italy can cause that much fear. It's got to be something else.
- Middle east? No news out of Iran except for a radiation leak.
- North Korea? Hard to take them serious.
- Sequestration? Debt Ceiling is resolved until May.
- Housing reports & consumer confidence due tomorrow.
- Durable Orders and Initial Claims due 2/27.
- GDP due 2/28?

Looks like about the same vertical delta (but in the opposite direction) as the DJ +318 day in early January.
What the market giveth, the market can take away. We had four years to fix the fundamental problems underlying our economy and squandered it.
There will come a day when neither Bernanko’s mouth nor his mouse will be able to paper over this festering wound.
Beware of buying this dip.

With the price of gasoline continuing to climb, my bet is that something bad is brewing in MENA.
