Sir Arthur Sullivan and Scott Joplin both shared the desire to write Grand Opera, while their publishers and the public preferred their more accessible popular music.

One of my students was so enamored of Joplin that he learned several of his complete original rags by the time he was 17.

Good to be back.

My 3 days at Democratic Underground were a bit strange, to be sure.

It was actually an easier gig than the C&W bar the following week. The BLUES DID NOT fit in there at all!

Schubert fell into the same trap. He wanted to be the next Rossini. His talents, however, lay elsewhere. None of his many operas are in the repertory, and on the rare occasion when one of his operas is staged, ordinary people can’t get tickets because every music professor in the world is there first.

Aloha and good afternoon, Hawaii...((HUGS))

Did you find things to do when FR was down? I was at 6’s and 7’s. It was awful!

In 1907, Scott Joplin turned 39, settled in New York and wrote some fine material. The first is a gem, played by the legendary Max Morath, another icon of the Great Ragtime Revival of the Seventies.

Joplin: “Searchlight Rag”

”Rose Leaf Rag”

”Nonpareil”

This was published after Joplin’s death in 1917, but it appears to date from 1907.

”Reflection Rag”

This masterpiece is a step above his other works for 1907 and even a step above “Maple Leaf Rag”. He takes the rag form and turns it into something classical, thoughtful and beautiful. The “C” theme where he moves up to D-flat just takes your breath away. This is Joshua Rifkin at the keyboard.

”Gladiolus Rag”

That’s Funny!

Seriously though...if I had a choice between a three hour concert of George and Ira Gershwin’s Pop songs, vs. Porgy and Bess, I would probably opt for the pop Song concert...even though Porgy & Bess is great. I just like their “Songs” better.

It is absolutely splendid to have FR back!

The training today was a snap. I've been using the software for this project for the last year - I know it inside and out.

We had a ninety-minute presentation from one of the associates on Attorney-Client privilege. He stated, several times, that most of us new more about priv than he did. He was correct.

Of course, I can't reveal the name of any of the entities involved in this case including the law-firm we're working for, but the footer used by this law-firm on their presentation stated "This is Mo-Fo."
