Nebraska Republican Sen. Mike Johnanns has informed Republicans in his home state that he will retire at the end of his current Senate term, GOP sources tell NBC News.
The first-term senator has informed Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman that he won't run for reelection in 2014, a Republican official said.

Sen. Mike Johnanns - Nobody knows who he is. Why? Because to MSM doctrine there are only 2 Republican Senators worthy of any attention at all, Gramnesty and the Maverick. All other R’s need not be interviewed.
Going to need to after he votes to confirm Chuck Hagel.
He’s not familiar to me. the article says he was one of two GOP Senators to publicly back Hagel for nomination.
OTOH, he was chosen by the Governor as Hagel’s replacement, and it’s pretty hard to not endorse someone you have replaced.
Is he a RINO, as I suspect? Maybe a placeholder for the Gov? Does anyone from Nebraska know if someone better might be put forward?
Hagel, Bob Kerry, Ben Nelson and now this guy....what in the heck are yinz all smoking in Nebraska before you go to the voting booth?
You may be right. On the other hand, maybe he just did not want to continue to associate with the graft, corruption and crooks that make up Senate. Scratch Senate, make it the Congress and Washington D.C.
Nobody’s smoking anything. We’ve been busy ridding ourselves of the trash and the rinos; something a lot of other states would be well advised to try.
He was/is voting for Hagel and I believe he’s getting a bit of blowback from that decision. Some think he wants to run for governor again and I would say that is a likely prospect.
Thoughts on who may run?
He is one of those pro-Hagel Republicans. Go figure.
That being said, who do conservatives have on the bench to compete for this seat?
tom osborne?
Lawrence Phillips
If he wants to run for governor again he better not vote for Hagel...
I called his DC office to tell him to change his vote on Hagel, because Obama has not qualified (has no legally-verifiable birth facts, according to the HI state registrar) and so the 20th Amendment says Joe Biden has to “act as President”. The secretary sounded like she was either sleep-walking or stoned.
Rural Nebraska has to compete with Omaha. That’s how we get the results we get.
I hope that Congressman Jeff Fortenberry will take the plunge. Very conservative, and by 2014 will have served 10 years in the House.
Jeff Fortenberry and Dave Heineman are the two names I’ve seen put forward so far.
Everyone is waiting on Gov. Heineman. Personally, I wouldn’t mind Don Stenberg (good man, but has had a terrible time getting nominated), though this might be the year he can go for the Governorship (after the former Lt Gov Sheehy and original odds-on favorite to succeed Heineman was forced to resign).
Ever since the late Carl Curtis retired, Cornhuskers have had a failed record of nominating and electing conservatives. It just never seems to happen and not for long if it does. Cornhuskeres must like to be “liked” and to support “winners”. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them fall on their swords for Jebbie in 2016 either.
Stenberg has lost enough, time for him to give it a rest.
Heineman will be elected if he runs. He’s term limited out of the Governorship, which is also wide open since the GOP LT Governor resigned in a sex scandal.
Heineman says no to running for Senate. He wants to devote more time to completing his term as governor!
