You'd never hear "the Holy Rollers shot down that trial balloon faster than they could shake a snake at it" because Holy Rollers don't float trial balloons. They're just not that cynical and they're not that monolithic.

But, we've heard that slur from the MSM as well as other religious groups in plenty of different contexts before. I've seen it before on FR. We've seen southern Evangelicals repeatedly mocked and skewered for their actual beliefs for decades, on comedy shows and in news reports.

So, I'm not at all sure where a Catholic would get the impression that they're being singled out. If anything, they get something of a pass, being largely northeastern and majority Democrat.
