It all started to unravel in 1855. Stephen Foster turned 29, and he and his wife left the New York area to return to Pittsburgh. His parents died in quick succession. His close friend Charles Shiras, the abolitionist firebrand, died. His debts increased, he received advances from his publishers, and then a bad case of writer’s block kept him from providing the songs for which he had contracted. From all this travail came his masterpiece, “Hard Times”. This is one of America’s greatest songs.

There are many ways of interpreting this song. What makes a song timeless is its ability to convey the same thought to different generations. The depression that had begun with the Panic of 1837 had never completely ended, the discovery of gold in California had distorted the money supply, and economic times had been difficult for nearly two decades. Foster had his own problems with the deaths of family members and close friends. His writer’s block shut off his only source of money, and his marriage was on the rocks. Hard times indeed.

Thomas Hampson’s version is an authentic treatment of the song as written in 1855. It just breaks your heart with that wonderful drone figuration and descant on Jay Ungar’s fiddle. The video is amazing.

”Georgia” was a 1995 vanity production filmed by Jennifer Jason Leigh and her mother, starring Jennifer and good friend Mare Winningham as two sisters. “Hard Times” is the song that runs through the movie like a thread. At the beginning of the movie, Winningham, as Georgia, sings a perfectly smooth country-folk version of the song.

At the end, Jennifer Jason Leigh, as Sadie, sings the song in a voice destroyed by cigarettes, alcohol and drugs, and it’s absolutely hair-raising. Unfortunately, Van Morrison demanded that the clip be removed from YouTube, so I can’t post it. Damn!

What bothered me the most were the pictures of the Great depression. I fear for America.

And I think that photographer in Africa should have put his camera DOWN and picked the kid UP. I love taking pictures, but I would gladly give up a Pulitzer if I could have saved a life. I guess that is a constant struggle for photojournalists. And it explains the aftermath for the photographer.

In the first years of the 1850's, the dominant issue on the national agenda was immigration, specifically the way that the massive wave of Irish Catholics was changing a predominantly WASP America. Northeastern cities experienced religious riots.

But the issue of slavery forced its way to the head of the nation’s dance card by the middle of the decade, thanks to Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Dred Scott v. Sandford, Bleeding Kansas and (later) John Brown’s raid. Abolitionists, who had long been the lunatic fringe of the anti-slavery movement, found themselves at the political center as moderates on the issue now agreed with them. The center was not holding.

Stephen Foster viewed all this with concern. He had sold all his future rights to his songs to raise money to support himself, his wife and his daughter. Money was running out, and the vultures were circling. Songs were few and far between, and those he wrote were of the sentimental variety, not the plantation variety. This song from 1859 is an example.
