there is no inherent need for good TV to be left of center

Nothing makes me change the channel quicker than a tv character spouting a political or social agenda comment that has no relation to the program.

Broadcast TV needs to be watching the numbers to see what people will/want to watch. Every season, several new programs are pulled within weeks because people won't watch them. Yet, the next season, broadcasters try similar programs with their underlying political and social agendas stuck in the scripts.

Downton has had huge ratings here, and especially for PBS. It’s also wildly popular in the U.K.

And nothing makes me change the channel quicker than seeing two homosexuals kiss, which is what happened in the one and ONLY episode of Downton Abbey I tried to watch. And have never watched again.
