In fact, by having a “ban on gays” in place, the scouts quite likely lulled the parents into a false sense of security. “It’s got to be safe, there’s no gays.”

While true, currently their policies are such that the BSA can claim they’ve done EVERYTHING LEGALLY POSSIBLE to prevent pederasty.
As soon as they start putting the rights of adult volunteers above the rights of the kids, that will no longer be true.
