I suppose they could set off a really big conventional explosives pop but it’s most likely real. We’ll be looking for any leakage that’s radioactive. Plus the seismologists are saying the earthquake is atypical meaning induced by an explosion.

I’m not real comfortable with strange creatures having nuclear toys.

Well, remember the Ryongchon explosion happened 2 years before the first nuke test in 2006 and it was a huge amount of ammonium-nitrate fertilizer? Why not use the free fertilizer that you get from Japan and South Korea, turn it into a bomb, blow up a tunnel, and terrorize the world with it?

It's not the strange creatures having powerful weapons that bothers me, it's the humans.
