I agree. But I think you are missing my point.
My point is that these guys are not like you and me.
They understood that when you took the job, you did not put down the mitre and walk away.
I actually envy him, if this is the truth. How many of us would hang it up and walk away if we had the means to do so?

And for the record, both of my parents were pretty active at that age, so I expect nothing less.
