I hate to say this here. But this is exactly why Governor Patrick declared a ban and got everyone except emergency personnel and media off the road for 24 hours during the storm.

Back in ‘78 several folk died waiting for someone to come dig out their cars on Route 128.

It’s hard to plow when the road is filled with cars stuck in 3 feet of snow.

Could have set a bad precedent, but in this case you can bet it saved a few lives.

Yeah, at first glance it sounded fascistic, but looking back at ‘78, it was rather prudent. He knew that there would be many who thought they could handle the snow on the road, but putting the force of law behind the travel ban would make them pay attention. And there was an exception for medical, safety, and utility workers, so the folks who truly HAD to be out on the road were in no danger of being arrested or fined.

He knows his people. It might have been a wildly inappropriate directive for a governor of, say, Wyoming to make, but in liberal states far too many people need clear, simple orders to follow.
