I once ate at a restaurant that was suspected of replacing beef with horsemeat. I realized the truth when I was halfway through a steak and somebody yelled “Whoa!”
Damned near choked to death.

Nothing at all wrong with horsemeat. Most of us over fifty have probably eaten it. The worry about the drugs is over blown. Unless it was a racehorse, most horses are not usually given “bute” routinely. The anti-slaughter folks have used bute as the reason it’s dangerous to eat horsemeat. Bute in very rare cases can cause dangerous anemia in humans that take the drug. It is no longer used in human medicine, although I know plenty of horse people who have taken it. What the anti-slaughter people have managed to do is destroy the horse industry here and cause untold suffering for many unwanted horses.
