I greatly appreciate the opportunity to debate and respond to Selwyn Duke's piece, which makes many very reasonable points. Its biggest deficiency is that it never actually proposes measures --whether specific new regulations or repeal of specific existing ones -- that would improve the current system. Instead, Mr. Duke says he would scale back gun laws from 22,000 to 5,000, two arbitrary numbers, neither of which bear any correlation to smart policy.
Before discussing potential policy responses, let me say that Mr. Duke is quite right that thousands of gun laws, unsurprisingly, did not eliminate crime (I am unaware of anybody who ever suggested that they would, or of any law that ever has). I find wholly unpersuasive the suggestion that laws -- particularly new laws -- are unnecessary because "bad guys" will not follow them or because they will fail to eliminate a problem completely.
By that same logic, why should we have insider trading or fraud laws? After all, bad guys will continue to seek advantages in stock trading and other areas of commerce to the detriment of law-abiding citizens. Why pass laws preventing access to drugs? Lawbreakers will still obtain them. Heck, why limit access to nuclear materials? Terrorists sure won't stop in their pursuit. By definition, lawbreakers will continue defying laws. Yet, they are precisely the people who laws are meant to address.

At the very least one can look at England now. They got 'rid' of guns. Now violent crimes are through the roof and defending yourself in your own home can lead to fines and jail time.
I believe you know all of this. I think you simply want to get rid of guns, period. One step at a time. Registration is the big prize. Once guns are registered gun control advocates like you will simply sit back and wait. Crime will happen. It can't be stopped. Sooner or later some children will die in a violent tragedy where no one was allowed to defend them and up people like you will pop with your cries of 'How many more?" One step closer. Always one step closer to confiscation. Never towards more freedom. Even if, perhaps, you aren't thinking about confiscation today you will in the future. Because whatever laws you support today will invariably make things worse and you will decide it wasn't that you were wrong, oh no, it was that you didn't go far enough! History shows that is what people who think as you do always decide.
And so, since I can't possibly convince you to see my point of view I will end with the only thing you will understand: an invitation. I invite you leave me alone. I am not harming anyone. I never have. I hope it never happens. But I'm prepared if it does. In fact, I actually make you safer just by existing. And that's because, unlike criminals and the insane, the only people I would ever hurt would have to be trying to hurt me first. And even then I would feel just awful about it.

That says it all about his “reasonable” approach. First rule of stupidity: “When you are in a hole, STOP DIGGING.
The purpose of laws isn’t to stop a behavior, it’s to enable punishment after crimes are committed. It is the threat of punishment that deters the behavior, but not the laws themselves. Thinking that a law will prevent gun crimes, especially those crimes in which the perpetrator intends to die at the conclusion of the planned crime, is insane, because future prosecution is no deterrence to someone who plans to kill himself anyway. The things that prevent crimes are those measures which make the perpetrator think he cannot carry his plans to completion, i.e. by presenting him with the possibility that he will be shot to death before he does what he was intending to do. To that end, allowing or even encouraging armed people to be present in abundance at the planned location is the best option. Of course, the planned location is only known to the criminal, so the best option is Vermont carry everywhere. Say, how come Vermont doesn’t have many mass shootings?
Time to change how we are fighting!

The laws you hold up as examples are laws against the specific bad behavior that needs to be prevented. So that would justify laws against shooting people that don't need shooting....oh, wait! We already have THOSE laws.
Your "analogy" doesn't justify the prior restraint on currently lawful behavior by good people that you're trying to ram through using this crisis. To justify that you'd have to be able to point to a current system of computer registration, and background checks to buy a PC (even if you sell it at a garage sale to your neighbor!), because if someone has a computer, they MIGHT use it for fraud or insider trading, despite the obvious issue that computers have a wide variety of other lawful, benign uses.
